The Arena

Marc Spector woke up in a Tokyo cemetery in his white cloak, with no memory of how he had got there, which was not unusual. Khonshu’s voice in his head told him there was a predator nearby, a creature that ate human flesh. Steven Grant, one of the other voices, suggested asking politely first. Jake Lockley suggested hitting it.

Ken Kaneki stood between the gravestones, mask on, one red eye glowing. He had come to visit a friend’s grave and found a man in white muttering to himself in three different voices. “Are you all right?” Kaneki asked. Moon Knight stared at him. “Depends who you ask.”

Khonshu decided for all of them. Moon Knight drew his crescent darts and threw them.

Round One

Kaneki’s kagune burst from his back and swatted the crescent darts out of the air. Moon Knight closed in, and under the full moon he was strong, far stronger than a normal human, his fists hitting Kaneki hard enough to crack gravestones. Kaneki blocked with his arms and felt them bruise.

They fought through the cemetery, Moon Knight’s brutal mercenary style against Kaneki’s fast and fluid ghoul combat. Moon Knight was a superb fighter, honed by years of war and nights of vigilante justice. He ducked a kagune strike, swept Kaneki’s legs and drove a staff into his chest.

Kaneki rolled away, coughing blood, then stood up as his ribs knit back together. Moon Knight watched it happen and muttered, “Oh, that’s annoying.”

The Turn

Kaneki let go of his restraint, and his kagune multiplied into a swarm of crimson tentacles, each one fast enough to cut steel. Moon Knight had to fight all of them at once. Marc wanted to attack. Steven wanted to run. Jake wanted to try something clever with the cemetery fence.

For one fatal second, the three of them argued, and Moon Knight hesitated. A kagune hit him in the chest and threw him through a crypt wall. He staggered out, cloak torn, staff broken, still standing through sheer stubbornness. Under the full moon, he healed faster too. But not fast enough.

Kaneki did not hesitate. He had already lived through his own fight with himself, years ago, and won.

The Finish

Moon Knight came back in, Khonshu roaring in his head, and landed a punch that knocked Kaneki’s mask off. But Kaneki caught his arm with one kagune, his other arm with another, and lifted him off the ground, holding him there in the moonlight, helpless.

He looked into Moon Knight’s eyes and saw the confusion there, three minds and a god all shouting at once. He recognised it. He had once been two people fighting inside one body, too. Slowly, he lowered Marc back to the ground and let him go.

“It gets quieter,” Kaneki said softly. “If you stop fighting yourself.” Moon Knight sat on a gravestone, breathing hard, and for once, all three voices in his head were silent. Khonshu sulked. Kaneki sat down beside him, and they watched the moon together until it set.

The verdict

Ken Kaneki wins

Moon Knight is a superb fighter and much stronger under the full moon, but Kaneki is more powerful, regenerates faster and attacks from more angles at once, and Moon Knight’s divided mind costs him a crucial second.

  • KaguneMultiple tentacles overwhelm a fighter who can only block one at a time.
  • RegenerationKaneki heals from blows that would cripple Moon Knight.
  • Mental unityKaneki has resolved his inner conflict; Moon Knight has not.

How the rematch could go differently: With Khonshu fully empowering him, or with the voices working together from the start, Moon Knight could take this.
