The Arena

Venom had followed a strange scent into a rainy city where people disappeared at night, convinced something there was eating humans, which the symbiote considered his territory. He found Ken Kaneki on a rooftop, mask on, kagune tentacles swaying in the rain like crimson ribbons.

Kaneki smelled the symbiote and frowned. It was not human. It was not a ghoul. It was hungry. “We don’t eat good people,” Venom snarled, his voice echoing. Kaneki tilted his head. “Neither do I. But I don’t think you believe me.”

Round One

Kaneki attacked first, his kagune lashing out like four crimson whips. They tore through Venom’s body, carving deep gashes. The symbiote reformed instantly, and Venom grabbed one of the tentacles and used it to swing Kaneki into a water tower.

They fought across the rooftops, two monsters with regenerative bodies, tearing each other apart and reforming. Kaneki was faster, his kagune more precise. Venom was stronger, his body able to shape itself into any weapon.

Venom grew a second mouth on his shoulder to bite at the kagune, and Kaneki flipped over him, landing on the edge of the roof in the rain. For a moment they circled each other, two shapes in the dark that no ordinary person would ever want to meet.

The Turn

Kaneki began to lose control, the hunger of the ghoul rising in him. His kagune multiplied into a monstrous mass, and he tore into Venom with frightening savagery, trying to bite the symbiote itself.

That was a mistake. The symbiote tried to bond with him through the wound. Kaneki felt it crawling into his flesh, an alien hunger meeting his own, and he screamed and tore himself free. For a moment, he was shaken and off balance.

Eddie’s voice rose inside the symbiote, alarmed. The ghoul’s hunger had nearly swallowed them both. Venom pulled back his tendrils and reformed, shaken too, but with one advantage Kaneki did not have: someone inside him telling him to keep his head.

The Finish

Venom pressed the advantage. He wrapped Kaneki in black tendrils, pinning his kagune, and squeezed, his superior strength crushing the ghoul against the rooftop. Kaneki struggled, his tentacles thrashing, but could not break free.

Then Venom did something unexpected. He looked into Kaneki’s eyes and saw, beneath the hunger, a frightened young man. “We know what it is,” Venom said, his grip loosening slightly. “Being two things at once. Hungry. Hating it.”

He let Kaneki go. Kaneki sat on the rooftop in the rain, gasping, and laughed bitterly. “You understand,” he said. Venom grinned his terrible grin. “We do. Now, where can a monster get a decent meal around here that isn’t people?” Kaneki pointed toward a nearby coffee shop.

Kaneki’s kagune went limp. Inside the black mass, he could feel the symbiote’s heartbeat, alien and steady, and Eddie’s, human and nervous, side by side.

The verdict

Venom wins

Kaneki is faster and his kagune is deadly, but Venom is stronger, can reshape his body into any weapon, and his attempt to bond with Kaneki shakes the ghoul badly enough to let Venom pin him.

  • StrengthVenom overpowers Kaneki once he gets a grip.
  • ShapeshiftingThe symbiote can turn its body into any weapon or restraint.
  • Psychological edgeThe bonding attempt shakes Kaneki at the decisive moment.

How the rematch could go differently: A fully awakened Kaneki in his dragon form, or using sound as a weapon, could tear the symbiote apart faster than it could heal.
