The Arena

A rift between worlds dropped Matt Murdock into a forest training ground, where a young man in a green jumpsuit was doing his thousandth one-handed push-up. Rock Lee leapt to his feet, delighted. “A new opponent! Your youthful spirit burns brightly, stranger!”

Matt heard Lee’s heartbeat, steady and impossibly strong, and the muscles in his legs, coiled like springs. He sighed. “I don’t suppose you’d believe me if I said I just want to go home.” Lee bowed deeply. “After our match, I will help you find the way!”

Round One

Lee attacked with a blur of taijutsu, kicks and punches so fast the air whistled. Daredevil heard every movement and slipped through them with acrobatic grace, landing a billy club strike across Lee’s ribs and a kick to his jaw. Lee rolled with it and laughed with delight.

For several minutes it was a beautiful fight, two masters of hand-to-hand combat trading blows in the forest. Matt’s radar sense let him predict every attack. Lee’s speed and stamina let him keep attacking no matter how often he was countered.

The Turn

Lee realised he was holding back. He bent down and unstrapped the training weights from his legs. They fell to the ground and cratered the earth like falling meteors. Matt heard the impact and frowned. What kind of person trained with weights like that?

Then Lee moved, and Matt’s radar sense could barely keep up. Lee was suddenly everywhere at once, so fast that the sound of his movements arrived after his strikes. Matt took three blows before he could even react.

Matt took a breath and listened harder, past the wind and the birds, down to the creak of Lee’s tendons before each step. It bought him a fraction of a second. Against anyone else, that would have been enough.

The Finish

Matt adapted, as he always does, tracking Lee by the displacement of air instead of sound. He landed a desperate counter that split Lee’s lip. Lee grinned and opened the first of the Eight Gates.

Green energy flared around him, his skin flushing red, his speed and strength multiplying. Leaf Hurricane, Primary Lotus: a spinning kick that launched Matt into the air, followed by Lee wrapping him in bandages and driving him back toward the ground. Lee pulled out of the final impact at the last moment, setting Matt down hard but safely.

Matt lay on the grass, dazed. Lee knelt beside him and bowed. “You fought splendidly! Your senses are amazing!” Matt laughed weakly. “You’re the fastest person I’ve ever fought. And the loudest.” Lee helped him find a way home the next morning, and promised to visit.

The verdict

Rock Lee wins

Daredevil’s radar sense reads Lee’s attacks for a long time, but Rock Lee’s speed after dropping his weights, and his Eight Gates, push him beyond what Matt’s senses and reflexes can follow.

  • SpeedWithout his weights, Lee moves faster than Matt can track.
  • The Eight GatesThey multiply Lee’s power far beyond human limits.
  • StaminaLee never tires, while Matt is a human with human limits.

How the rematch could go differently: Against a Rock Lee who refused to drop his weights or open a gate, Daredevil’s acrobatics and radar sense could carry a pure skill contest.
