The Arena
Clint Barton came through a portal into a ruined city and found it full of enormous stone buildings and empty streets. He also found a young woman with a red scarf and two blades swinging toward him on steel cables, very fast. Mikasa Ackerman landed on a rooftop across from him. “Who are you?”
Clint raised his hands slowly. “Just a guy with a bow. Who are you?” Mikasa’s eyes narrowed. “You came out of a hole in the sky. Titans have come out of holes before.” Clint looked at the enormous footprints in the street below. “Okay, that’s concerning. But I’m not a Titan. I’m an Avenger.”
Mikasa did not know what an Avenger was. She launched at him anyway.
Round One
She came at him faster than anyone Clint had ever seen, her ODM gear whirring, her blades flashing. He dove off the rooftop, fired a grappling arrow and swung to the next building, and she followed him effortlessly, swinging between the stone towers like a hawk.
Clint fired three arrows at once. She cut all three out of the air in a single spin. He fired a net arrow. She sliced through it before it opened. He fired an explosive arrow at the building beside her, and she was already gone, swinging around the corner. Clint whistled. “Okay. You’re really good.”
Mikasa landed a kick to his chest that sent him tumbling across a rooftop. He rolled to his feet, breathing hard. He was going to need a smarter plan.
The Turn
Clint was not the strongest Avenger, or the fastest. But he had survived alongside gods and super-soldiers for years, and he had learned to find the one thing that made an opponent dangerous and take it away. He watched Mikasa swing between the buildings and noticed: she could not fly. Everything depended on those cables and those gas canisters.
He stopped aiming at her. He fired an arrow at the wall where her next anchor would land, a sticky foam arrow, and her grappling hook bounced off the foam and failed to catch. She dropped, twisted, fired the other hook, and Clint was already firing again, an EMP arrow that fizzled her gas valve.
For the first time, Mikasa was falling with nothing to catch her.
The Finish
She landed in the street below in a roll that would have broken anyone else’s legs, came up with her blades drawn, and charged on foot. Without her gear, she was still superhumanly strong and fast. But Clint was a rooftop above her, and he never misses. A bolas arrow wrapped her legs. A net arrow pinned her arms. A sleeping-gas arrow burst at her feet.
Mikasa fought the gas for an impressively long time, struggling against the net, before her eyes finally closed. Clint climbed down, took her blades carefully, and sat beside her until she woke an hour later, furious.
“You cheated,” she said. Clint shrugged. “I’m just a guy with a bow. Everyone I fight is stronger than me. I don’t get to fight fair.” Mikasa stared at him, and something in her expression softened slightly. “Neither do we,” she said quietly, looking at the giant footprints in the street. Clint handed back her blades. “Then I guess we’re on the same side.”
The verdict
Hawkeye wins
Mikasa is far stronger and faster, but Hawkeye never misses and always looks for the one thing that makes an opponent dangerous: he takes out her ODM gear with trick arrows, then pins her from a rooftop.
- Trick arrowsFoam, EMP, bolas and gas arrows for every situation.
- Targeting the gearWithout ODM gear, Mikasa loses her mobility.
- Never missesClint hits every shot from range.
How the rematch could go differently: A Mikasa who closed the distance before Clint understood her gear would cut him down in seconds.
