The Arena
Kagura fell out of a spaceship accident onto the top of an enormous stone wall, with her umbrella in one hand and a bag of sukonbu in the other, and immediately looked over the edge. On one side was a city. On the other, giant naked humans were wandering around a field. “Woah,” she said. “Big people.”
Mikasa Ackerman landed behind her on her gear’s wires, blades drawn. “Who are you? How did you get on the wall?” Kagura turned and chewed her sukonbu thoughtfully. “I fell out of the sky. Do you have any rice?” Mikasa did not lower her blades. “Explain how you got here, or I will make you.”
Kagura’s eyes narrowed. Nobody threatened a Yato before dinner. She popped open her umbrella. “Okay. Let’s fight first, then eat.”
Round One
Mikasa attacked with the speed and precision of humanity’s best soldier, her blades flashing in the sunset. Kagura blocked them with her umbrella, which was made of something much harder than umbrella material, and the blades bounced off. Mikasa’s eyes widened. Kagura swung back, and the umbrella hit like a battering ram.
Mikasa flew back across the wall, caught herself on her gear’s wires and swung around for another pass. She was fast, faster than Kagura expected, and her strikes found gaps in the umbrella’s guard. Kagura took a cut on her arm and yelled in surprise. Nobody had cut her since her brother.
Then she opened fire with the umbrella, which was also a machine gun, and Mikasa had to dodge a stream of bullets across the top of the wall.
The Turn
A fifteen-metre Titan climbed up the outside of the wall, drawn by the noise, and reached for both of them. Mikasa reacted instantly, swinging around to the back of its neck for the kill. Kagura reacted faster. She jumped up, grabbed the Titan by the nose and threw it off the wall, all fifteen metres of it.
Mikasa landed and stared at her. A girl half her size had just thrown a Titan like a sack of rice. Kagura dusted off her hands. “Weird big guy. Is he friends with you?” Mikasa took a long breath. “No.” Kagura nodded. “Good. He smelled bad.”
Mikasa understood, in that moment, that she was not facing a human at all. The girl’s strength was something else entirely, a power from another world.
The Finish
Mikasa did not give up. She was an Ackerman, and Ackermans do not give up. She came in with everything she had, every technique she had learned killing Titans, and landed two clean strikes on Kagura’s shoulder. Kagura grunted and grabbed her wire mid-swing.
She pulled, and Mikasa came flying toward her. Kagura caught her by the collar, spun her around and pinned her flat on the top of the wall with one hand, as easily as pinning a cat. Mikasa struggled with all her strength and could not move an inch.
“You’re super strong for a human,” Kagura said cheerfully. “Like, really. You should come work for Gin-chan.” Mikasa stopped struggling and stared up at her. “Who is Gin-chan?” Kagura let her go and helped her up. “A lazy idiot with no money. Do you have food now?” Mikasa, against all her instincts, found herself smiling and sharing her bread.
The verdict
Kagura wins
Mikasa is a superb fighter and much faster than Kagura expects, but the Yato are an alien warrior race with strength far beyond any human, Ackerman or not.
- Yato strengthKagura throws a fifteen-metre Titan off a wall with one hand.
- The umbrellaA shield, a club and a machine gun in one.
- DurabilityKagura shrugs off strikes that would cut down a Titan.
How the rematch could go differently: In bright sunlight, which weakens the Yato badly, Mikasa’s speed and blades would have a real chance.
