The Arena

Power wandered through a strange rift in the middle of the night and came out in front of a convenience store in Edo. She was hungry. She was always hungry. Inside, a girl with red hair in buns and a purple umbrella was standing in front of the snack shelf, reaching for the last bag of shrimp chips.

“Those are mine,” Power declared. “I am the great Power! Everything in this store belongs to me!” Kagura turned around slowly, chewing on a piece of sukonbu. “Who are you, horn girl? I saw them first.” Power pointed at her. “That is a lie! I saw them in a dream last week!”

The cashier hid under the counter. He had worked the night shift in Kabukicho for years. He knew what was coming.

Round One

Power grabbed the bag. Kagura grabbed the other end. They pulled. The bag tore. Chips flew everywhere. Both of them screamed. Power formed a giant blood hammer out of her own blood and swung it at Kagura’s head, shouting, “DIE, CHIP THIEF!”

Kagura blocked it with her umbrella, which did not break, and kicked Power through the magazine rack. Power landed in a pile of manga, jumped up, and threw a spear of blood. Kagura opened her umbrella, and it bounced off. Then Kagura opened fire with the umbrella, which was also a machine gun.

The convenience store did not survive the first round. The cashier crawled out the back door.

The Turn

Power realised quickly that Kagura was much stronger than she was. A Yato could throw a car. Power, like most fiends, preferred to win by cheating, and if that failed, by running away. She shouted “LOOK, A FREE MEAL!” and pointed behind Kagura.

Kagura turned to look, because she would always turn to look, and Power sprinted out of the store at full speed. She got about ten metres before Kagura caught her by one of her horns and dragged her back inside. “Liar!” Kagura yelled. “There was no free meal!” Power wailed. “There might have been!”

Power formed a blood scythe in desperation. Kagura bent it in half with one hand and dropped it on the floor.

The Finish

Power tried one last trick. She burst into tears, loud and dramatic, sobbing that she was only a poor little fiend who had not eaten in days. Kagura paused, suspicious. Power peeked through her fingers to see if it was working. Kagura saw her peek.

She picked Power up by the collar and dropped her into the store’s chest freezer, closed the lid and sat on it. Power pounded on the lid from inside, screaming threats and insults. Kagura opened a new bag of chips, which she had found hidden behind the counter, and ate them calmly.

After ten minutes, she let Power out, shivering and furious, and handed her half the bag. Power stared at the chips, then at Kagura, then grabbed them and stuffed them all into her mouth at once. “I let you win,” she announced through a mouthful of crumbs. Kagura shrugged. “Sure, horn girl.” They walked out together into the dawn, already arguing about breakfast.

The verdict

Kagura wins

Power’s blood weapons are dangerous and she is a master of lies and running away, but Kagura is a Yato with monstrous strength, her umbrella blocks everything, and she has seen through every trick in the book.

  • Yato strengthKagura bends blood weapons with one hand.
  • The umbrellaA shield and machine gun Power cannot get through.
  • Seeing through liesKagura catches Power’s fake tears and fake escapes.

How the rematch could go differently: A Power who fought dirty from the shadows instead of starting with a hammer to the face might at least escape with the chips.

Who do you think wins?

Who would win in a fight between Power and Kagura?

Kagura wins. Power’s blood weapons are dangerous and she is a master of lies and running away, but Kagura is a Yato with monstrous strength, her umbrella blocks everything, and she has seen through every trick in the book.
