The Arena
Joseph Joestar arrived in modern Tokyo through a time slip he did not understand, and almost immediately made the mistake of saving a stranger from a mugger in front of a news camera. Light Yagami saw the footage that night. A powerful, loud foreigner, appearing out of nowhere, getting attention. A variable. Light did not like variables.
He found Joseph’s name in a hotel registry the next morning: Joseph Joestar, written in big, cheerful handwriting. It was almost too easy. He invited the stranger for coffee on a rooftop café, to see his face in person, the last thing the Death Note needed.
Joseph arrived late, wearing sunglasses, and sat down with a grin. “So,” he said, “you want to kill me.” Light’s coffee cup stopped halfway to his mouth.
Round One
Light recovered instantly and laughed politely. “I’m sorry, what?” Joseph leaned back. “Your hand keeps going to your bag. Your smile doesn’t reach your eyes. You asked my name three times. I’ve fought Nazis, vampires and gods made of stone. I know the look of a guy with a plan.”
Light kept smiling and reached for his pen. Joseph pointed at him. “Your next line is, ‘You must be mistaken, Mr. Joestar.’” Light opened his mouth and said exactly that, and then went pale. Joseph laughed so loudly the other customers turned around.
Light realised, for the first time, that he was facing someone who read people the way he did, but with ten times the experience.
The Turn
Light excused himself to the bathroom, took out the notebook and wrote “Joseph Joestar” in perfect handwriting, with the time of death set for five minutes later. He returned to the table calmly and watched the clock. Joseph ordered another coffee, and a cake, and complained loudly about the prices in Tokyo.
Five minutes passed. Joseph was still eating. Light felt a chill. “That’s my grandfather’s name,” Joseph said, as if reading his mind. “Well, his name is Jonathan, but people mix us up. The name in the hotel register? I lied about it. I lie about everything. It’s kind of my thing.”
He held up his passport. The first name on it had a small, deliberate spelling change. Joseph had registered under a fake name on purpose, the moment he saw a famous genius taking an interest in him.
The Finish
Light snapped. He reached for the notebook in his bag to write the real name from the passport. Joseph’s hand moved faster, Hamon crackling at his fingertips, and wrapped a thin strand of Hamon-charged string around the bag before Light even touched the clasp. A gentle spark, and Light’s whole arm went numb.
Joseph pulled the bag across the table, opened it and found the notebook. He read the rules on the inside cover, whistled, and looked at Light over the top of his sunglasses. “Huh. A magic death book. And you used it on people you thought were bad guys. Bet you thought you were saving the world.”
He dropped the notebook into Light’s coffee, ruining every page, and stood up. “Next time,” he said cheerfully, “don’t try to outthink a guy who cheats.” Then he pointed at Light again. “Your next line is, ‘This isn’t over.’” Light said it, through gritted teeth. Joseph laughed all the way down the stairs.
The verdict
Joseph Joestar wins
Light is a genius with a weapon that kills anyone whose name and face he knows, but Joseph is a master trickster who reads people instantly, lies about his own name by habit, and moves faster than Light can write.
- TrickeryJoseph registers under a fake name, so the Death Note fails.
- Reading peopleHe predicts Light’s words and plans before they happen.
- HamonSuperhuman reflexes let him seize the notebook before Light can use it.
How the rematch could go differently: With Shinigami eyes, Light would see Joseph’s real name at a glance, and no trick in the world would save him.
