The Arena

Light Yagami stepped out of a Shinigami rift into Gotham City and fell in love with it immediately. Here was a city drowning in criminals, the perfect place to prove that his judgement could fix the world. Within days, dozens of Gotham gangsters were dying of sudden heart attacks, and the newspapers were calling the killer “the Judge”.

Light saved his most important target for last: the most dangerous criminal in Gotham, the man on every front page, the Joker. He studied the photographs carefully. He memorised the face. Then he opened the Death Note and realised he had a problem.

Nobody knew the Joker’s name. Not the police, not Batman, not even the Joker, who told a different story about himself every time anyone asked.

Round One

Light tried everything. He wrote “Joker” in the notebook. Nothing happened. He tried “The Joker”. Nothing. He tried names from old police records, rumours, gossip, the names of three different men the Joker had claimed to be. Every time, he waited forty seconds, watching the television. Every time, the Joker kept laughing.

Meanwhile, the Joker had noticed that someone was killing Gotham’s criminals, and he was furious. Not because criminals were dying, but because someone else was getting all the attention. He decided to find this Judge, and then to have some fun with him.

Light was a genius. But he had never before faced an opponent who did not care about winning, only about the joke.

The Turn

The Joker hijacked every television in the city. “Hello, Judge!” he cackled. “You’re killing my friends. That’s rude. So here’s a game: every hour you don’t come out and play, I blow up a building. Tick tock!” The first building went up at noon.

Light had planned for detectives, police, even Batman. He had not planned for someone willing to kill hundreds of innocent people just to make a point. He could not kill the Joker with the notebook. He could not reason with him. And every hour, more people died because of the game Light had started.

For the first time, Light felt the ground slipping out from under his perfect plan.

The Finish

Light tried to manipulate the Joker into revealing his name, sending anonymous messages, offering deals, setting traps. The Joker treated each one like a love letter and answered with a bigger explosion. Then, purely by chance, he walked past a pharmacy and recognised the exact same nervous, superior expression on a young man buying a newspaper.

He followed Light back to his hotel, waited in the shadows, and when Light opened his door, the Joker was sitting on his bed, flipping through the Death Note. “A magic notebook that kills people!” he laughed. “And you used it on gangsters? How boring! I would have used it on the mayor’s whole family!”

Light lunged for the notebook, and the Joker sprayed him with laughing gas. The last thing Light heard, before he woke up tied to a chair in Arkham, was the Joker reading names from the city phone book, stopping to giggle after each one, and slowly deciding which name to write first.

The verdict

The Joker wins

Light is a genius with a near-unstoppable weapon, but the Death Note needs a true name, and the Joker does not have one. Without that, Light is a clever student against the most unpredictable criminal in fiction.

  • No real nameThe Joker’s true identity is unknown, so the Death Note cannot touch him.
  • UnpredictabilityLight’s plans assume a rational opponent; the Joker is anything but.
  • Willingness to escalateThe Joker turns Light’s game into a city-wide hostage crisis.

How the rematch could go differently: If a Shinigami traded Light the Shinigami eyes, he would see the Joker’s true name and could end it in forty seconds.

Who do you think wins?

Who would win in a fight between The Joker and Light Yagami?

The Joker wins. Light is a genius with a near-unstoppable weapon, but the Death Note needs a true name, and the Joker does not have one. Without that, Light is a clever student against the most unpredictable criminal in fiction.
