The Arena

A prison between worlds erupted into a riot, inmates from two universes fighting in the yard, and in the middle of it all, a giant masked man stood on a pile of broken guards, his Venom tubes pumping. Bane surveyed the chaos he had created and smiled. Then a shield flew out of the smoke and hit him in the face.

Captain America caught the shield on the rebound and walked into the yard. “That’s enough,” he said. Bane rubbed his jaw and looked at the star-spangled hero with interest. “Ah. The American super-soldier. I have read about you.” He cracked his knuckles. “I broke the Batman. I will break you too.”

Steve raised his shield. “You can try.”

Round One

Bane attacked with brutal efficiency, a master of a dozen fighting styles, his punches backed by Venom-fuelled strength. Steve blocked with his shield, and the impact drove him back across the yard. He countered with a combination, fast and precise, and Bane took it without flinching.

Bane studied him as they fought, the way he had studied Batman for months before breaking him. Steve’s fighting style was clear and honest: no tricks, no deception, just perfect technique and relentless determination. Bane began to plan.

He pumped more Venom into his veins, his muscles swelling, and hit Steve with a blow that sent him crashing through a watchtower.

The Turn

Steve climbed out of the wreckage and kept fighting. Bane hit him again. He got up again. Bane grabbed him, lifted him high over his head, the same position he had once broken Batman’s back in, and roared to the watching inmates.

Steve did not panic. He had been in worse positions against worse enemies. While Bane held him up, Steve saw the Venom tube running from the back of Bane’s mask, the source of his strength, exposed. He reached down and grabbed it.

Bane felt the pressure on the tube and froze.

The Finish

Steve tore the Venom tube free. Bane’s strength drained instantly, his muscles shrinking, and Steve dropped to the ground behind him, spun and drove his shield into the back of Bane’s knees. The giant fell. Steve hit him once more, a clean punch to the jaw, and Bane collapsed face-down in the prison yard.

The riot stopped. Every inmate in the yard stared at the hero standing over the man who had broken the Batman. Steve looked around at them. “Back to your cells,” he said calmly. They went.

Bane rolled over, breathing hard, his body back to its normal size. Steve offered him a hand. “You’re a brilliant fighter,” Steve said. “But you rely on that stuff too much.” Bane looked up at him with something like respect. “And you,” he said, “rely on getting back up.” Steve smiled. “It’s worked so far.”

The verdict

Captain America wins

Bane is a brilliant tactician whose Venom makes him stronger than Steve, but Captain America keeps getting back up, stays calm under pressure, and finds the Venom tube that powers Bane’s strength.

  • The Venom tubeBane’s strength depends on an exposed weakness.
  • ResilienceSteve keeps getting up after every blow.
  • ComposureHe stays calm even when lifted overhead.

How the rematch could go differently: A Bane who studied Steve for months, as he did with Batman, would find a weakness far less obvious than a tube.
