The Arena

Steve Rogers was on a mission in Siberia, investigating a secret Soviet programme that had once tried to recreate the super-soldier serum, when he found an old training facility half-buried in the snow. Inside, a giant of a man was hitting a frozen side of beef with his bare fists. Ivan Drago turned and looked at the shield on Steve’s back.

“Captain America,” Drago said slowly. “They showed us films of you. They said I was built to be better.” Steve put the shield down against the wall. “I’m not here to fight you.” Drago removed his coat. “I know. But I need to know if they were right.”

Steve looked at the giant for a long moment, then nodded. Some questions can only be answered one way.

Round One

Drago hit first, a straight right that Steve blocked with both forearms. It drove him back two metres across the frozen floor, and his arms went numb to the shoulder. Steve had been hit by super-powered villains. This man had no serum, no powers, and still hit like a truck.

Steve answered with a combination, fast and precise: jab, hook, body shot, uppercut. Drago took them all and barely moved. Steve frowned. The man’s body had been engineered through years of brutal training and science, a human pushed to the absolute edge of what flesh can do.

They traded blows in the snow, two men built by two governments, each trying to prove the other wrong.

The Turn

Drago landed the punch he had been built for, a perfect straight right with everything behind it, and Steve went down hard in the snow. For a moment, he did not move. Drago stood over him, breathing heavily. “I must break you,” he said, almost apologetically.

Steve got up. The super-soldier serum had given him strength and speed at the peak of human potential, but it had also given him the ability to recover from punishment that would have stopped anyone else. He wiped the blood from his lip and raised his fists again. “I can do this all day.”

Drago stared at him. He had knocked down Apollo Creed and Rocky Balboa. Nobody had ever got up from that punch and smiled.

The Finish

Steve changed tactics. He stopped trading power with power and started fighting like a soldier: footwork, angles, combinations from positions Drago could not see coming. He worked the body, attacked the legs, and avoided the right hand completely. Drago grew slower and more frustrated with every exchange.

Finally, Drago threw one last desperate right, and Steve slipped it, stepped inside and drove an uppercut into his jaw that lifted the giant off his feet. Drago landed on his back in the snow and stayed there, staring up at the storm, breathing hard.

Steve offered him a hand. Drago looked at it for a long time, then took it. “They were wrong,” Drago said quietly. “I was not built to be better. I was built to be a weapon.” Steve pulled him to his feet. “So was I,” he said. “You don’t have to stay one.”

The verdict

Captain America wins

Drago hits as hard as Steve and even knocks him down, but the super-soldier serum gives Captain America superior speed, recovery and stamina, plus decades of real combat experience.

  • Super-soldier serumSteve recovers from punishment that would stop Drago’s other opponents.
  • Combat versatilityHe switches from boxing to soldier tactics when power fails.
  • StaminaSteve outlasts the heavyweight in a long fight.

How the rematch could go differently: Under strict boxing rules over twelve rounds, Drago’s ring craft and raw power would make it much closer.
