The Arena
Steve Rogers came through a portal into the training ground of a Japanese school for heroes and found a green-haired teenager in a hero costume practising alone, punching the air with green lightning crackling around his fists. Deku saw the man with the star-spangled shield and froze, his eyes going wide.
“You’re a hero,” Deku whispered, pulling out a notebook. “I can tell. The way you stand, the shield, the symbol on your chest. Are you a symbol of peace? Like All Might?” Steve smiled warmly. “I suppose I’ve been called that. Who’s All Might?” Deku’s eyes filled with tears. “My teacher.”
Steve looked at the boy, at the scars on his arms, at the determination in his face, and recognised something. “Want to spar, son?” Deku nodded so fast his notebook fell over.
Round One
Deku opened with One For All at twenty percent, green lightning racing across his body, and charged. Steve met him with his shield, and the impact pushed him back across the training ground. Steve was surprised. The kid was strong. Much stronger than he looked.
Steve was the better fighter, decades of combat experience in every movement. He read Deku’s attacks, deflected them with his shield and countered with precise strikes to the ribs and legs. Deku took notes in his head as he fought, analysing every move, adjusting.
By the fifth exchange, he was dodging Steve’s counters. By the tenth, he was predicting them.
The Turn
Deku pushed One For All higher, forty-five percent, his body glowing green, and hit Steve’s shield with a punch that rang across the training ground like a cathedral bell. Steve slid back fifty metres, his arm numb. Vibranium absorbs energy. That punch had been more than it could fully absorb.
Steve grinned. He threw the shield, and it ricocheted off three trees and a wall and hit Deku in the back of the head. Deku stumbled, laughing. “That’s amazing! How do you calculate the angles?” Steve caught the shield on the rebound. “Practice. A lot of practice.”
Deku nodded seriously. He knew all about practice. He used Blackwhip to snatch the shield right out of Steve’s hand.
The Finish
Without his shield, Steve fought on with his fists, and he was still a superb fighter. But Deku was superhuman, faster and stronger, and he had been learning Steve’s style the whole fight. He floated above him with Float, dodged a perfect punch, and tapped Steve on the chest with a controlled Delaware Smash, a flick of the finger that knocked him off his feet.
Steve lay on the grass, looking up at the sky, and laughed. Deku landed beside him, panicking. “Are you okay? I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to hit that hard!” Steve sat up. “I’m fine, son. That was a good fight. A really good fight.”
He handed Deku his shield to hold. Deku held it reverently, like a sacred object. “When I was a kid,” Steve said, “I was the weakest kid in my neighbourhood. Someone gave me a chance to be more.” Deku looked up, his eyes shining. “Me too,” he whispered. Steve put a hand on his shoulder. “Then don’t waste it.” Deku never did.
The verdict
Izuku Midoriya wins
Captain America is the far more experienced fighter, but Deku is superhuman, learns Steve’s style mid-fight, and his One For All Quirks, including Blackwhip and Float, give him tools Steve cannot counter.
- One For AllDeku’s strength and speed far exceed peak human.
- AnalysisHe learns Steve’s fighting style as they fight.
- Multiple QuirksBlackwhip takes the shield; Float gives him the air.
How the rematch could go differently: A younger Deku, before he mastered One For All, would lose to Steve’s experience and skill.
