The Arena
Bane had heard that a fighter in Japan called himself the hungriest man alive, a giant who had added inches to his own legs through surgery to grow stronger. Bane, who had built himself out of a prison and a needle, wanted to know which method made a better monster.
Jack Hanma came to Gotham on a cargo ship and walked into Blackgate’s flooded exercise yard as if he owned it. Bane cracked his knuckles and turned the dial on his wrist. Green Venom pumped into the tubes at his neck.
Round One
Bane grew. Muscles swelled, veins stood out, and he charged across the yard like a freight train. Jack met him head-on. The collision threw water three metres into the air, and the two giants locked arms and pushed, feet sliding on the wet concrete.
Bane was a genius as well as a brute. He broke the grip, trapped Jack’s arm and tried the move that broke Batman: lifting him overhead to slam his spine across a knee. Jack twisted in the air at the last moment and came down on his feet.
Jack landed first, a long overhand right from a reach Bane had not expected, and broke the bigger man’s mask strap. Bane answered with a precise uppercut into Jack’s jaw that would have taken the head off a lesser fighter. Both giants stepped back and looked at each other with new respect.
The Turn
Jack fought with no style at all, just enormous reach and a willingness to take any punishment to land his own. Bane’s fists broke his nose and cheekbone. Jack laughed through the blood and kept coming.
Then he lunged inside a punch and bit down on Bane’s forearm, through the muscle, and did not let go. Bane roared and hammered his skull with his free fist. Jack held on, worrying the arm like a wolf, and through it bit one of the Venom tubes clean in half.
The Finish
Green fluid sprayed across the yard. Bane’s swollen body began to shrink, the extra strength draining out of him with every heartbeat. He reached for the dial, and Jack bit through the second tube.
Without the Venom, Bane was still strong, still smart, still dangerous. But he was no longer a giant, and Jack was. Two enormous haymakers and a knee to the jaw put him face-down in the flood water.
Jack spat out a piece of tubing and looked down at him. “You need a machine to be strong,” he said. “I made myself strong.” Then he walked out of Blackgate past a row of guards who did not try to stop him.
The verdict
Jack Hanma wins
Bane is smarter and, on Venom, as strong, but his power depends on a weak point a biter like Jack can reach, and Jack’s reach and pain tolerance let him keep fighting while he goes for it.
- The Venom tubesBane’s strength has an off switch that Jack finds with his teeth.
- Reach and sizeJack’s surgically lengthened frame gives him range Bane must close.
- Pain toleranceJack absorbs bone-breaking shots without losing focus.
How the rematch could go differently: A Bane who protected his tubes or used an internal Venom supply could grind Jack down with technique and tactics.
