The Arena

Ohma Tokita had beaten champions of a dozen styles, and one name kept coming up in every conversation about who was truly the strongest: Yujiro Hanma. So Ohma went looking for him, and found him on a hotel rooftop at midnight, drinking wine from the bottle.

“You’re the Ogre?” Ohma asked. Yujiro looked him over with mild curiosity, as if inspecting a new kind of insect. “Ah. A Kengan dog. Go on, then. Entertain me.”

Round One

Ohma did not hold back. He opened with the Niko Style’s fastest strikes and a redirection that should have turned Yujiro’s weight against him. Yujiro let the strikes land, all of them, and did not move.

Then he swatted Ohma with the back of his hand, almost lazily, and Ohma flew across the rooftop and through an air-conditioning unit. When he stood, two ribs were broken.

Ohma got up anyway. He had fought men twice his size, men who could break steel, and he had never once been simply ignored. He came back faster, layering the Niko Style’s strikes into combinations, aiming for the eyes, the throat, the inside of the knee. Yujiro blocked a few out of politeness and let the rest bounce off him, watching Ohma’s footwork with the attention of a scholar.

The Turn

Ohma activated the Advance and pushed it further than he ever had, past the point his body warned him about. His skin turned red, his heart hammered, and he hit Yujiro with a strike that cracked the concrete under the Ogre’s feet.

For the first time, Yujiro staggered a step. He wiped a thin line of blood from his lip, and his eyes lit up with something close to joy. The muscles of his back began to rise.

Ohma pressed his advantage with everything he had, a storm of Iron Bones strikes, each one powered by a heart about to burst. Several landed clean. One bloodied Yujiro’s nose. For three seconds on that rooftop, the Ashura was hurting the strongest creature on Earth, and he knew it would be the best three seconds of his fighting life.

The Finish

Yujiro let Ohma attack for another twenty seconds, studying every movement, enjoying every blow. Then he stepped inside a punch and caught Ohma’s fist in his palm. The force of the Advance hit him like a truck and he did not move an inch.

One punch to the body ended it. Ohma folded around Yujiro’s fist, the Advance collapsing, his legs gone. He hit the rooftop and could not get up.

Yujiro looked down at him for a while. “Your heart will kill you before anyone else does,” he said, almost kindly. “Fix it. Then come back.” He picked up his bottle and walked to the edge of the roof, and was gone.

The verdict

Yujiro Hanma wins

Ohma lands real damage with the Advance, but Yujiro sits in a different weight class of power and durability, and treats one of the Kengan world’s best fighters as a curiosity.

  • Power gapYujiro’s strength is beyond anything in the Kengan tournament.
  • DurabilityHe absorbs Ohma’s best strikes before even trying.
  • ExperienceYujiro reads the Advance’s cost and waits for it.

How the rematch could go differently: Even a fully mastered Ohma would need Yujiro’s arrogance to work against him; in a straight fight, the gap is too large.
