The Arena
Diana came through a portal to a ruined Olympus, a world where the gods had been slaughtered by their own son, and found the King of the Gods sitting alone on a broken throne. Zeus looked up at the Amazon in her golden armour, and his eyes flashed with sudden, paranoid fear. “You are a child of the gods,” he said. “You have come to kill me.”
Diana shook her head. “I came because I heard a god was suffering.” Zeus rose, lightning crackling in his hands. “Every child of a god comes eventually to take the throne. I know how this ends.” Diana raised her bracelets. “Not every story ends the way you fear.”
Zeus did not believe her. He had never believed anyone. He hurled the lightning.
Round One
Diana crossed her bracelets, and the lightning bolt struck them and scattered into a thousand sparks. Zeus stared. Nothing mortal should have survived that. He hurled another, and another, and Diana deflected them all, walking steadily toward his throne through the storm.
Zeus grew to the size of a mountain and struck at her with his fists. Diana dodged, leapt onto his arm and ran up it, striking him in the jaw with a blow that staggered the King of the Gods. Zeus roared and threw her across the ruins of Olympus.
She rose from the rubble, her armour scorched, her eyes steady. “You don’t have to do this,” she said. Zeus only answered with lightning.
The Turn
Diana threw the Lasso of Truth. It wrapped around Zeus’s giant wrist, and the golden glow ran up his arm and into him. He shrank back to his normal size, gasping, and the lasso showed him the truth he had spent his whole life refusing to see.
It was not prophecy that had destroyed his family. It was his fear of it. He had betrayed his son because he was afraid of being betrayed. He had made the prophecy true by trying to prevent it. Every god who had died on Olympus had died because Zeus had been too frightened to trust anyone.
Zeus fell to his knees in the ruins of his throne room, the lasso still glowing around his wrist, and for the first time in his immortal life, the King of the Gods wept.
The Finish
He did not get up. He did not reach for his lightning. He simply knelt there, defeated by something no weapon could have touched: the truth about himself. Diana let the lasso slacken and knelt beside him.
“My father was a god too,” she said quietly. “I learned that gods are not defined by their power. They are defined by what they protect.” Zeus looked at her with red-rimmed eyes. “I protected nothing,” he whispered. “Only my throne.” Diana nodded. “Then protect something else.”
She left him in the ruins, alone with the truth, and went home. Years later, a strange rumour spread among the surviving gods: that the King of Olympus had been seen wandering the mortal world, helping travellers on mountain roads, asking for nothing in return. Nobody believed it. Diana did.
The verdict
Wonder Woman wins
Zeus has far more raw power, but Diana deflects his lightning with her bracelets, and the Lasso of Truth forces him to face the paranoia that destroyed his own family, which breaks him more completely than any blow.
- The Lasso of TruthIt forces Zeus to face his deepest fear.
- BraceletsDiana deflects his lightning bolts.
- Zeus’s paranoiaHis fear of being overthrown is his greatest weakness.
How the rematch could go differently: A Zeus who never let the lasso touch him and fought from the sky with pure lightning would overwhelm Diana on power.
