The Arena
Carol Danvers was investigating a crashed Kree outpost in a desert when a woman in golden armour landed beside the wreckage, a lasso at her hip and a sword in her hand. Diana of Themyscira had followed the same strange energy signal from her own world. They looked at each other across the burning sand.
“That outpost holds a weapon,” Diana said. “It could destroy my world.” Carol crossed her arms. “It holds a weapon that could destroy mine. And I’m not handing it to someone I just met.” Diana raised her shield. “Then we must decide this the old way.” Carol grinned, her fists beginning to glow. “Fine by me.”
They both moved at once.
Round One
Diana struck first with her sword, and Carol caught the blade between her glowing palms. Diana smashed her shield into Carol’s face, and Carol flew backwards across the desert. She landed, laughed, and fired a photon blast that knocked Diana off her feet.
They fought hand to hand, and Diana was the better warrior by far, centuries of Amazon training against Carol’s military combat. She landed three blows for every one of Carol’s. But Carol absorbed the energy of every hit, and every hit made her stronger.
Diana noticed. She switched from striking to grappling, trying to pin the pilot down.
The Turn
Diana threw the Lasso of Truth and wrapped it around Carol’s waist. The golden glow ran up her body, and Carol felt the truth pulled out of her: she was not trying to take the weapon. She was trying to destroy it. Diana loosened the lasso slightly, surprised.
Carol used the moment. She grabbed the lasso, glowing brighter, and flew straight up, dragging Diana with her, faster and faster, out of the atmosphere, into space, toward the sun. She absorbed its energy as she flew, her body blazing, and in Binary form, she became a living star.
Diana held on to the lasso as they rose, her skin burning, her eyes narrowed against the light. She did not let go.
The Finish
In Binary form, Carol’s power was on a cosmic scale, far beyond anything Diana could match. She turned in space and fired a single photon blast, and Diana was thrown back toward Earth, burning through the atmosphere like a meteor. She hit the desert beside the outpost and left a crater fifty metres wide.
Carol landed at the edge of the crater, glowing, ready to continue. Diana climbed out, battered, her armour scorched, and looked at her with deep respect. “You were telling the truth,” Diana said. “You meant to destroy it.” Carol nodded. “I always do.”
Diana stepped aside. Carol blasted the Kree weapon into molten slag. Then she sat down beside the Amazon on the edge of the crater, her glow fading. “You’re a much better fighter than me,” Carol admitted. Diana smiled. “And you are a much brighter one.” They watched the sun go down together, which seemed only fair.
The verdict
Captain Marvel wins
Diana is the far better warrior, but Carol absorbs energy from every blow and from the sun itself, and in Binary form her power becomes cosmic, beyond anything Diana can match.
- Energy absorptionEvery hit Diana lands makes Carol stronger.
- Binary formCarol’s power rises to a cosmic scale.
- RangeIn space, Carol can fight from a distance Diana cannot close.
How the rematch could go differently: On the ground, in a pure hand-to-hand fight with no sunlight, Diana’s skill would win almost every time.
