The Arena
Supergirl was flying over the ocean when her pod’s old navigation system malfunctioned and dumped her into a strange world full of islands and pirates. She landed on a beach just as a skinny young man in a straw hat came running out of the jungle, chased by a giant boar. Kara caught the boar with one hand and set it down gently.
Luffy stared at her, his mouth open. “You’re so strong! Are you a monster? Can you fly?” Kara floated up a few metres. “I can.” Luffy’s eyes turned into stars. “Join my crew! You’d be the best!” Kara laughed. “I’m not a pirate.” Luffy grinned. “Fight me, then! If I win, you join!”
Kara landed, amused. “And if I win?” Luffy thought about it. “Then I’ll buy you meat!”
Round One
Luffy stretched his arm and threw a Gum-Gum Pistol, and Kara caught his fist in one hand, surprised by how hard he hit. He bounced back and threw a Gatling, a barrage of punches, and she dodged most of them with superspeed and blocked the rest. Then she flicked him in the forehead, and Luffy flew across the beach into the jungle.
He came bouncing back out, laughing. Kara was impressed. Most people did not get up after that. He went into Gear Second, his skin steaming, his speed multiplying, and landed a Jet Pistol that actually pushed her back a step.
Kara grinned. “Okay. You’re fun.” Her eyes began to glow red.
The Turn
Luffy went to Gear Fourth, then Gear Five, his hair turning white, his laughter like a drumbeat, the whole island turning to rubber around them. He grabbed the beach and swung it at Kara like a blanket, wrapping her up, and slammed her into the sea.
Kara burst out of the water, soaking and laughing so hard she could barely fly. “That’s ridiculous! You turned the whole island into a cartoon!” Luffy laughed back, stretching his fist to the size of a mountain and bringing it down on her. Kara caught it with both hands and held it there.
For a long moment, Gear Five pushed against Kryptonian strength. Then Kara pushed back, and the giant fist began to shrink.
The Finish
Gear Five is incredibly powerful, but it drains Luffy fast, and Kara had a yellow sun above her and no limit to her stamina. She flew circles around him at superspeed, dodging every rubber attack, until his hair turned black again and he sat down in the sand, exhausted, his body steaming.
Kara landed beside him and flicked him gently on the forehead. He fell over backwards, laughing. “You win! You’re so strong!” Kara sat down next to him. “You too. You made me laugh more than any fight ever has.”
Luffy kept his promise. He went into the jungle and came back with the biggest roasted boar Kara had ever seen. They ate it on the beach together, and Luffy asked her to join his crew eleven more times. Kara said no eleven times. On the twelfth, she said maybe. Nami, watching from the ship, put her head in her hands.
The verdict
Supergirl wins
Luffy’s Gear Five is creative and genuinely pushes Supergirl, but Kryptonian strength and speed under a yellow sun far exceed his, and Gear Five burns out long before she does.
- Kryptonian powerSupergirl’s strength and speed far exceed Luffy’s.
- StaminaGear Five drains Luffy; the sun keeps Kara going.
- DurabilityNothing Luffy throws seriously hurts her.
How the rematch could go differently: With a chunk of kryptonite, which Luffy would never think to use, the fight would end very differently.
