The Arena
Logan woke up on a moving train somewhere in the mountains, with no idea how he had got there, which was not unusual for Logan. Sitting in the next seat was a young man with flaming hair, eating his twentieth bento box with enormous enthusiasm. “Delicious!” Kyojuro Rengoku shouted after every bite. “Delicious!”
Rengoku sniffed the air and turned to Logan. “You smell of blood and something unnatural. Are you a demon?” Logan snorted. “I’ve been called worse.” Rengoku stood up, all cheerful certainty, and put his hand on his sword. “Then I must test you! If you are a demon, I will cut you down! If you are not, I apologise!”
Logan sighed and popped his claws. “Bub, I just woke up.”
Round One
They fought on the roof of the speeding train, snow whipping past them, the mountains roaring by. Rengoku used Flame Breathing, his sword wreathed in fire, and every strike was precise and incredibly powerful. Logan’s adamantium claws met the burning blade with a clang that echoed through the valleys.
Rengoku was the better swordsman by far. He cut Logan across the chest, then the arm, then the thigh. Logan bled, snarled and healed, every wound closing in seconds. Rengoku watched the cuts vanish and his eyes widened. “Your body regenerates like a demon’s!” Logan grinned. “Told you. I’ve been called worse.”
He lunged in close and slashed Rengoku across the shoulder. The Hashira did not flinch. He only smiled more brightly.
The Turn
Rengoku unleashed Fifth Form: Flame Tiger, a strike in the shape of a roaring tiger of fire, and it cut straight through Logan’s chest and threw him to the end of the train car. Any demon in Rengoku’s world would have died from that blow. Logan lay there, smoking, his ribs visible through the wound.
Then he got up. The flesh grew back over the bone, slowly, painfully, and he shook off the flames and walked back toward Rengoku with his claws out. The Hashira stared, then laughed in genuine admiration. “Your will to fight is remarkable!”
Logan grunted. “Will’s got nothing to do with it, kid. I just don’t stay down.” Rengoku raised his sword again, his eyes blazing.
The Finish
Rengoku used his final technique, Ninth Form: Rengoku, a strike that put every ounce of his strength, will and breath into a single cut of fire. It cut deep into Logan’s body, but adamantium does not break. The blade struck the skeleton and stopped, and Rengoku’s sword shattered against it.
He stood there, breathing hard, his blade in pieces, and Logan stood in front of him, wounds closing, claws out. Logan retracted the claws. Rengoku was exhausted, his breathing ragged, and he sat down heavily on the roof of the train. He had given everything, and it had not been enough.
Logan sat down beside him. “You’re a hell of a fighter, kid,” he said. “Best swordsman I ever met.” Rengoku smiled, still cheerful, even now. “I lost, but you are not a demon. I am glad.” Logan dug a cigar out of his jacket. “You hungry?” Rengoku’s eyes lit up. “Always!” They went inside and ate the rest of the bento boxes together while the train rolled on.
The verdict
Wolverine wins
Rengoku is the far better swordsman and could kill almost any demon in his world, but Wolverine’s healing factor recovers from every cut, and his adamantium skeleton breaks even Rengoku’s final technique.
- Healing factorWolverine regenerates from wounds that would kill any demon.
- AdamantiumHis unbreakable skeleton shatters Rengoku’s sword.
- EnduranceRengoku tires; Wolverine never truly does.
How the rematch could go differently: Against a Logan without his adamantium skeleton, Rengoku’s Flame Breathing could cut him down faster than he heals.
