The Arena
Jean Grey felt a mind on the moon: ancient, lonely and furious, sealed away for a thousand years. She flew there to understand it, the Phoenix Force glowing faintly around her, and landed on the grey surface beside a woman in white robes with three pale eyes and long silver hair.
“You are not of this world,” Kaguya said coldly. “And you carry a power that does not belong to you.” Jean smiled sadly. “It belongs to everyone, eventually. That’s the point of it.” Kaguya raised her hand. “All power belongs to me.” Jean’s eyes began to glow orange. “I hear that a lot.”
Kaguya opened a portal, and the moon vanished around them.
Round One
Kaguya dragged Jean through a dozen dimensions in a single breath: ice, lava, a desert, an endless ocean, each one designed to kill or trap. Jean followed the shifts with her telepathy, reading Kaguya’s mind a moment before each portal opened, and when they landed on a field of ice, she was already behind the goddess.
She struck with telekinesis, a wave of force that threw Kaguya across the ice. Kaguya answered with bone spears that turned anything they touched to ash. Jean stopped them in mid-air with her mind, then crushed them to dust.
Kaguya frowned. She had never fought a mind before. She had only ever fought bodies.
The Turn
Kaguya opened her third eye and cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi, the endless dream that had trapped the entire world. It fell over Jean like a heavy blanket, and for a moment, Jean found herself in a perfect world: her parents alive, her friends safe, Scott beside her, no pain anywhere.
Then she recognised it. She had been in other people’s minds her whole life. She knew the feel of an illusion. She reached through the dream, through the threads of chakra that powered it, and followed them back to the mind of the goddess who had cast it.
Inside Kaguya’s mind, she found a thousand years of loneliness, and a mother who had been betrayed by her own sons.
The Finish
Jean broke the Infinite Tsukuyomi from the inside, and the Phoenix Force exploded out of her, wings of fire spreading across the dimension. The flames did not burn Kaguya. They held her, gently, the way fire holds a candle, and drained the stolen chakra out of her until she stood before Jean small and tired.
Kaguya fell to her knees on the ice. “What have you done to me?” Jean knelt beside her. “I gave back what you took,” she said. “All that chakra came from other people. You were never meant to carry it alone.”
Kaguya looked at her with three tired eyes. “My sons sealed me away,” she said, almost a whisper. Jean put a hand on her shoulder. “I know. I saw.” The Phoenix glowed softly around them both, and for the first time in a thousand years, the Rabbit Goddess let someone sit beside her without trying to take something from them.
The verdict
Jean Grey wins
Kaguya’s dimensions, ash bones and Infinite Tsukuyomi would trap almost anyone, but Jean reads every attack before it comes, sees through the dream from the inside, and the Phoenix Force drains away the stolen chakra.
- TelepathyJean reads Kaguya’s portals before they open.
- Mental expertiseShe recognises and breaks the Infinite Tsukuyomi.
- The Phoenix ForceCosmic fire that dwarfs Kaguya’s chakra.
How the rematch could go differently: A Kaguya who sealed Jean in a dimension with no minds to read could cut her off from her greatest weapon.
