The Arena
Tony Stark arrived in Metropolis through a portal he had built himself, mostly to see if he could, and within an hour LexCorp satellites had flagged an unidentified flying armour over the city. Lex Luthor watched the footage in his office, fascinated and furious. Someone else had built something he had not.
He invited Tony to the top of LexCorp Tower, offered him a drink, and spent ten minutes trying to buy the armour. Tony laughed. “It’s not for sale, Lex. Neither am I.” Lex smiled thinly. “Everything is for sale, Mr. Stark. Some things just require a more persuasive offer.”
The floor-to-ceiling windows exploded inward, and a dozen LexCorp combat drones flew in. Tony sighed, finished his drink, and let the armour close around him.
Round One
Iron Man tore through the drones in eleven seconds, repulsor blasts punching through their armour, a micro-missile swarm taking out the last three as they tried to flank him. Then the wall behind Lex’s desk slid open, and Lex stepped into his green-and-purple warsuit, built from Kryptonian research and decades of planning to kill Superman.
The warsuit hit Tony with a kryptonite-powered energy blast that would have hurt even the Man of Steel. Tony’s armour took it badly, alarms flashing across his display. He crashed through three floors of LexCorp and out into the sky above Metropolis, sparks trailing from his left shoulder.
“FRIDAY,” he said, “please tell me we have a plan.” FRIDAY did not answer immediately, which was never a good sign.
The Turn
Lex followed him into the sky, and they fought across the skyline at supersonic speed. Lex’s suit was stronger, built specifically for a war with gods, and his strategy was flawless. He predicted Tony’s every manoeuvre, hit him with weapons designed for Superman, and drove him down into the harbour.
Under the water, with his systems rebooting, Tony did what he does best. He stopped fighting and started thinking. He scanned Lex’s armour in the few seconds he had, found its power signature, its frequencies and the pattern in its targeting, and began rewriting his own suit’s software on the fly.
When he rose out of the harbour, the nanotech armour had reshaped itself completely. New plating. A new frequency. A new weapon, designed in forty seconds for exactly one opponent.
The Finish
Lex fired his strongest blast. Tony’s new armour absorbed it, converted the energy and fired it back with interest. Lex’s warsuit sparked and shuddered, its shields collapsing. Lex adapted, of course. He was a genius too. But Tony was adapting in real time, upgrading every second, and Lex’s armour had been built years ago for someone else.
Tony landed beside him, overrode the warsuit’s command systems with a hack he had written mid-fight, and the armour went dead, freezing Lex inside it like a statue on the roof of his own tower. Lex glared through the faceplate, absolutely furious.
“You built that in a cave,” Lex said through his teeth. “With a box of scraps.” Tony’s faceplate slid open, and he grinned. “Yeah. Imagine what I can do with a weekend.” He left Lex frozen on the roof for the Daily Planet photographers, and flew home.
The verdict
Iron Man wins
Lex is every bit Tony’s equal as a strategist and his warsuit is built to fight gods, but Iron Man improvises and upgrades mid-fight, while Lex’s armour was designed long ago for a different enemy.
- AdaptationTony rewrites his armour in real time to counter Lex specifically.
- EngineeringStark’s nanotech can reshape itself; Lex’s warsuit cannot.
- Wrong targetLex’s weapons were designed to kill Superman, not a man in a suit.
How the rematch could go differently: With weeks to study Iron Man first, Lex would arrive with a warsuit built for Tony, and he plans better than anyone.
