The Arena
Ichigo Kurosaki followed a Hollow through a strange gate and found himself in a New York cemetery at midnight, under a full moon. He cut the Hollow in half and turned to leave, and found a figure in white robes and a crescent-shaped mask standing on a gravestone, watching him.
“You can see me?” Ichigo asked, surprised. Moon Knight tilted his head, the three voices in his head arguing about it. Khonshu, the moon god, answered for all of them. “We see all who walk at night,” Moon Knight said, in a voice that was not entirely his own. “And you carry death with you.”
Ichigo scowled. “I’m a Soul Reaper. Carrying death is kind of the job.” Moon Knight drew his crescent darts. Khonshu wanted to test him.
Round One
Moon Knight attacked first, crescent darts flying, then closing in with his staff. Under the full moon, his strength was at its peak, and his first blow knocked Ichigo back through a mausoleum wall. Ichigo climbed out, surprised. “Okay, you hit hard.”
He swung Zangetsu, his giant sword, and Moon Knight dodged it with brutal mercenary skill, then switched personalities mid-fight, his style changing completely. Ichigo had fought many strange opponents, but never one who became a different person every thirty seconds.
He fired a Getsuga Tensho, a crescent of blue energy, and it cut through the cemetery. Moon Knight leapt over it and landed on Ichigo’s shoulders.
The Turn
Khonshu took direct control, and Moon Knight’s strength surged with the moon god’s power, his eyes glowing white. He fought with a fury that was no longer human, and Ichigo was driven back across the cemetery, his sword ringing under every blow.
Ichigo gritted his teeth. “Bankai.” His giant sword became a slim black blade, and his speed exploded. Suddenly he was everywhere at once, and Moon Knight, even with Khonshu’s power, could not follow him. The cuts came from every direction.
Khonshu roared through Moon Knight’s mouth. Ichigo felt something ancient and divine pressing against him, and his own inner Hollow stirred in response.
The Finish
A white mask spread across Ichigo’s face. His Hollow power and his Soul Reaper power fused, and his black Getsuga Tensho tore through the cemetery and hit Moon Knight full on. The moon god’s avatar was thrown across the graves and into the cemetery wall, his white robes torn, his mask cracked.
Khonshu’s presence withdrew, leaving Marc Spector lying in the grass, battered and very human. Ichigo’s mask crumbled away, and he walked over. “You okay?” Marc looked up at the moon. “Khonshu’s angry,” he said. “He doesn’t like losing.” Ichigo shrugged. “He should try being a Soul Reaper. We lose all the time.”
Marc laughed despite himself. Ichigo helped him up. Then he noticed something: a spirit wandering lost among the graves, an old woman who had died that week. Ichigo walked over and gently sent her on to the Soul Society. Marc watched, quiet. For once, all the voices in his head agreed: that was a good thing to see.
The verdict
Ichigo Kurosaki wins
Moon Knight is at full strength under the full moon and Khonshu makes him dangerous, but Ichigo’s Bankai speed and Hollow mask give him power that even a moon god’s avatar cannot match.
- Bankai speedIchigo moves faster than Moon Knight can follow.
- Hollow maskIt doubles Ichigo’s power at the decisive moment.
- Getsuga TenshoThe black crescent overpowers Khonshu’s champion.
How the rematch could go differently: A Moon Knight with Khonshu’s full divine power, as the god has granted in his strongest moments, could match Ichigo.
