The Arena

Doctor Manhattan noticed a disturbance in the structure of time: a small town in New Jersey where reality kept shifting, one decade into another, the houses changing shape, the people changing clothes. He teleported to the town square and found Wanda Maximoff sitting on a bench, watching the sky flicker between colours.

“You are changing reality,” Manhattan said. Wanda looked at the glowing blue man with tired, red-rimmed eyes. “I am trying to fix it.” Manhattan tilted his head. “It cannot be fixed. Everything that will happen has already happened. I have seen it.” Wanda’s hands began to glow scarlet. “Then you haven’t seen me.”

For the first time in a very long time, Manhattan checked his perception of the future and found something he did not expect: it was moving.

Round One

Manhattan reached into Wanda’s atoms to rearrange them, gently, to put her to sleep. Her chaos magic surged, and his grip on her matter simply slipped away, as though the rules of physics had changed beneath his fingers. He tried again. Her body was made of atoms one moment and something else entirely the next.

Wanda answered with a wave of chaos magic that turned the town square into a field of red flowers. Manhattan disassembled himself and reformed on the other side of the field. She turned the field into the surface of the moon. He stood on it, unbothered, and the moon turned back into the town.

Two beings who could reshape reality were pushing against each other, and the town flickered between a dozen versions of itself every second.

The Turn

Manhattan’s greatest advantage was that he saw every moment of time at once. He knew every move Wanda would make. Or he had, until she understood what he was doing. She stopped trying to attack him and began, instead, to change the moments themselves, rewriting the future as fast as he could perceive it.

Suddenly, Manhattan’s perfect view of time went blurry, then blank. For the first time since the accident, he did not know what would happen next. He froze, overwhelmed by an experience he had forgotten: uncertainty.

“How does it feel?” Wanda asked quietly, walking toward him. “Not knowing what comes next?”

The Finish

Manhattan tried to retreat to Mars, to his glass palace, and found that Mars no longer existed in the version of reality Wanda had written around him. He tried to disassemble her, and her atoms were butterflies. He stopped trying. He stood in the town square, blue and silent, and looked at her.

“What do you want?” he asked. Wanda lowered her hands, and the town settled into one version of itself, the light steady at last. “I wanted my family back,” she said. “I made them out of nothing. And I learned that you can’t keep something you made just because you can’t bear to lose it.”

Manhattan was silent for a long time. Then he did something he had not done in years: he sat down beside a human being, on a bench, in a town, in a single moment of time, and listened. Wanda told him about her children. He did not see the end of the story. For once, he did not want to.

The verdict

Scarlet Witch wins

Doctor Manhattan controls matter and sees all of time, but Wanda’s chaos magic rewrites reality itself, changing the very moments he perceives and slipping out of his control over atoms.

  • Reality rewritingChaos magic changes the rules Manhattan’s powers depend on.
  • Blinding the futureWanda rewrites moments faster than he can perceive them.
  • Emotional powerHer magic grows with her grief and resolve.

How the rematch could go differently: A Manhattan who acted instantly, before Wanda understood how his time perception worked, could disassemble her in the first second.
