The Arena
Wanda Maximoff’s chaos magic was tearing holes between universes. Every time she grieved, reality cracked a little more, and one of those cracks opened into the Tower of Fate, a strange building that exists outside time. Doctor Fate, in his golden helmet, stepped through the crack to stop it.
“Your chaos is breaking the walls between worlds,” Fate said, his voice doubled, half human, half the ancient Lord of Order inside the helmet. Wanda looked at him with red, tired eyes. “I’m not trying to break anything.” Fate raised his golden hands. “Intention does not matter to chaos. Only order can contain it.”
Wanda’s hands glowed scarlet. “I’ve had a lot of people try to contain me.”
Round One
Wanda struck with chaos magic, and the Tower of Fate began to change: walls turning to water, stairs leading into the sky, rooms folding into each other. Fate raised a golden ankh of light, and every change undid itself, the tower snapping back into its proper shape, order restored.
Wanda tried again, stronger, rewriting the air itself into fire. Fate answered with a spell of perfect structure, and the fire became neat golden geometry, harmless. Every time she created chaos, he imposed order on it. Every time he imposed order, she broke it.
Neither could gain ground. The tower flickered between a thousand shapes and back again.
The Turn
Wanda’s power was tied to her emotions, and as the fight went on, her grief rose to the surface: her children, her brother, everyone she had lost. Her chaos magic surged, stronger than Fate had ever seen, and the Tower of Fate cracked down the middle, the cracks spreading into other universes.
Inside the helmet, Nabu, the ancient Lord of Order, spoke directly to Wanda in a voice like a closing door. “Chaos born of grief is still chaos. It will destroy everything you love, as it has before.” Wanda froze. She knew it was true. She had seen it happen.
The helmet glowed brighter, and Fate began to weave the strongest spell of order he knew.
The Finish
The spell did not attack Wanda. It surrounded her chaos magic, gently, and gave it a shape: a structure to flow through, like a river given banks. Her power did not disappear. It simply stopped breaking things. The cracks in the tower sealed. The cracks between universes closed one by one.
Wanda fell to her knees, exhausted, her power calm for the first time in years. Fate knelt beside her, and the voice that spoke was not Nabu’s but the human host’s, Kent Nelson, kind and tired. “Chaos is not evil,” he said. “It just needs somewhere to go.”
He taught her the spell before she left. It did not take away her grief. But it meant her grief would no longer break worlds. Wanda went home, and for a long time afterwards, the walls between universes held. She never forgot the man in the golden helmet who had contained her without caging her.
The verdict
Doctor Fate wins
Scarlet Witch’s chaos magic is more powerful in raw terms, but Doctor Fate channels a Lord of Order, the natural opposite of chaos, and he contains her power by giving it structure rather than fighting it.
- Order against chaosNabu’s magic is the direct opposite of Wanda’s.
- ContainmentFate shapes her power instead of trying to overpower it.
- Home groundThe Tower of Fate exists outside time.
How the rematch could go differently: A Wanda at the height of her power, with no hesitation and no doubt, could break even a Lord of Order’s structure.
