The Arena
Logan had been living quietly in the Japanese mountains when a hunter came through the snow, not with a rifle, but with his bare hands. Yujiro Hanma had heard of a man with claws and an unbreakable skeleton who could not be killed. He wanted to know if that was true.
Logan lit a cigar and looked at the huge man with red hair and a grin full of teeth. “You’re the guy they call the Ogre.” Yujiro nodded. “And you are the man who does not die.” Logan popped his claws. “Bub, everybody keeps trying to test that.” Yujiro laughed. “I will be the one who succeeds.”
The snow began to fall more heavily. Neither of them moved for a long time. Then both of them did.
Round One
Logan slashed, and his claws opened three deep lines across Yujiro’s chest. Yujiro looked down at the wounds, at his own blood on the snow, and his eyes lit up with pure joy. Nobody had cut him like that in years. He punched Logan so hard the wolverine flew backwards through three pine trees.
Logan got up, his ribs knitting back together, and charged again, berserker rage in his eyes. They fought through the snowbound forest, claws against fists, Logan slashing and healing, Yujiro bleeding and laughing. Every blow Yujiro landed broke something in Logan’s body. Every bone healed in seconds.
Yujiro began to study him, the way he studies every opponent. He noticed that the skeleton never broke. Only everything around it.
The Turn
Yujiro changed tactics. He could not break the adamantium. He could not outlast the healing factor by damage alone. So he started hitting Logan in ways designed not to break bones but to steal his breath, his balance and his consciousness: strikes to the jaw, the temple, the solar plexus, the nerves.
Logan’s healing factor repaired the damage, but it could not repair the shock. Every blow rattled his brain inside his adamantium skull. He staggered, shook it off, charged again, and staggered again. His claws found Yujiro less often. His swings grew wider.
Yujiro grinned. “Your body cannot die,” he said. “But your mind can still go to sleep.”
The Finish
Logan threw everything into one last charge, claws out, snarling, and Yujiro stepped inside the swing and hit him with a single palm strike to the jaw that rang his skull like a bell. Logan’s eyes rolled back. He fell face-first into the snow and did not get up.
He was not dead. He could not be. He was simply unconscious, his healing factor working away at the damage while he slept. Yujiro stood over him, bleeding from a dozen claw wounds, and laughed until the snow fell off the trees.
When Logan woke up an hour later, there was a bottle of sake beside him in the snow and a note in rough Japanese characters: “You do not die. I do not lose. A good fight.” Logan read it twice, drank the sake, and decided he was moving somewhere much further from Japan.
