The Arena

Yujiro Hanma had heard rumours of a world where ninjas punched holes in mountains, and he went looking for the strongest of them. He found a man in a green jumpsuit doing handstand push-ups on top of a rock in the middle of a canyon. Might Guy saw him coming and flipped to his feet, grinning, giving a thumbs-up.

“Ah! A challenger with the eyes of a beast!” Guy shouted. Yujiro’s demon back flexed. “I hear you are the strongest taijutsu fighter in your world.” Guy struck a dramatic pose. “I am the Hidden Leaf’s Sublime Green Beast! Let us test our youth!” Yujiro laughed, a sound like rocks grinding together.

Guy stopped smiling for just a moment. He could see what this man was. He decided not to hold back.

Round One

Yujiro attacked, and his first punch hit Guy’s guard so hard it drove him through the canyon wall. Guy came out of the rubble laughing. “Magnificent!” He answered with Leaf Hurricane, and Yujiro took it on his forearm without flinching, then grabbed Guy by the leg and slammed him into the ground.

Guy opened the first five Gates in quick succession, his skin flushing red, and suddenly he was faster than Yujiro, a blur striking from every direction. Yujiro took the blows and laughed, his demon back writhing with excitement. He had not been hit this hard since his son grew up.

He began to hit back, harder and harder, and the canyon began to crumble around them.

The Turn

Guy opened the Seventh Gate, the Gate of Wonder, and a green aura erupted around him like steam from a volcano. Evening Elephant: five punches, each one fast enough to create a vacuum that struck like a cannon. They hit Yujiro one after another and drove him across the canyon, his feet carving trenches in the rock.

Yujiro stopped at the far end of the canyon, bleeding from his mouth for the first time in decades. He wiped it with his thumb and looked at it. Then he smiled, the widest smile anyone had ever seen on the Ogre’s face. “Finally,” he said. “Finally, someone worth fighting.”

He charged, faster and stronger than ever, and his punch shattered Guy’s guard and broke two of his ribs. Guy fell to one knee. He knew what he had to do.

The Finish

“Eighth Gate,” Guy whispered. “Gate of Death. Open.” His blood turned to steam. A red aura exploded around him, rising into the sky in the shape of a dragon. His body began to burn from the inside, his life converting into raw power, more power than he had ever touched. Night Guy.

He moved, and the canyon split in half. The kick hit Yujiro with a force that bent space itself, a strike that had once nearly killed a god. Yujiro was thrown through the air and buried in a mountain, and when the dust settled, the Ogre lay in the ruins, his demon back still, unable to rise.

Guy collapsed, his body burning away. Yujiro dragged himself out of the rubble, crawled over and, for the first time in his life, did something kind: he carried the dying ninja back through the portal to the Hidden Leaf, to the medical ninjas who could save him. He never told anyone why. He never needed to.

The verdict

Might Guy wins

Yujiro matches and overwhelms Guy through seven Gates, but the Eighth Gate gives Might Guy a burst of power that once nearly killed a god, and no human, not even the Ogre, can withstand it.
