The Arena

Toji Fushiguro took a contract to kill a man in Tokyo. The client was very rich and very frightened. The target was Yujiro Hanma. Toji read the file, saw the photographs of broken soldiers and destroyed tanks, and laughed. He took the job anyway. He liked a challenge, and he liked money more.

He found Yujiro in an abandoned warehouse, sitting on a crate, eating a steak with his hands. Yujiro looked up. “Someone sent you to kill me,” he said, chewing. Toji leaned against the doorframe, smiling. “Yeah. They paid well, too.” Yujiro finished his steak. “Then earn it.”

Toji pulled a curled-up cursed spirit off his shoulders and drew a blade from its mouth.

Round One

Toji moved faster than anyone Yujiro had ever fought, his body born without cursed energy and compensated with a physique beyond human. He was behind Yujiro before the Ogre turned, his blade slicing across Yujiro’s back. Yujiro laughed, spun, and his fist missed Toji by a centimetre.

They fought through the warehouse at blinding speed, Toji cutting, dodging and switching weapons from his storage curse: a sword, a chain, a staff. Yujiro took cuts across his arms, his chest, his cheek, and his grin only grew wider. Here, finally, was a man as fast as he was.

Then Yujiro landed one punch, and Toji learned what it felt like to be hit by the Ogre.

The Turn

Toji drew the Inverted Spear of Heaven, a short blade that cancels any cursed technique it touches. It had killed sorcerers who thought themselves invincible. He drove it into Yujiro’s side, and it cut, and it did nothing else. Yujiro had no technique to cancel. His strength was simply his body.

Toji frowned. For the first time, the Sorcerer Killer was facing someone who fought exactly as he did: with nothing but a body pushed past every limit. The difference was that Yujiro’s body was further past it.

Yujiro pulled the spear out of his side, looked at it, and tossed it back to Toji. “Use something that works,” he said.

The Finish

Toji used everything that worked. The chain. The staff. Every trick he had learned in a life of killing people stronger than himself. He landed blows that should have ended the fight a dozen times. Yujiro took them all, bleeding and laughing, and kept coming.

Finally Yujiro caught Toji’s chain, pulled him in, and hit him with a punch to the chest that sent the Sorcerer Killer through the warehouse wall and into the street. Toji lay on the pavement, his ribs broken, staring up at the sky.

Yujiro walked out and looked down at him. “You were the fastest man I have ever fought,” he said. Toji coughed and grinned. “Didn’t matter, though.” Yujiro laughed. “No.” Toji closed his eyes. “Client’s not getting a refund,” he muttered. Yujiro laughed even louder, and left him there to heal.

The verdict

Yujiro Hanma wins

Toji is faster than almost anyone and lands countless cuts, but the Inverted Spear has nothing to cancel on a man with no technique, and Yujiro’s body is further beyond human limits than Toji’s.

  • Pure physiqueYujiro’s body outclasses even Heavenly Restriction.
  • No technique to cancelThe Inverted Spear of Heaven is useless against him.
  • DurabilityHe absorbs blows that should end the fight.

How the rematch could go differently: A Toji with time to set up an ambush and a weapon designed for pure flesh rather than cursed energy might land the killing blow.
