The Arena
Yujiro Hanma had searched across many worlds for an opponent he could not defeat. In City Z, he heard about a hero who won every fight with a single punch. He found Saitama sitting on a park bench, reading a supermarket flyer. Yujiro stood in front of him, his shadow falling across the flyer. “You are Saitama.”
Saitama looked up at the giant red-haired man with the demon face on his back. “Yeah. Are you a monster?” Yujiro grinned. “Some say so. I am Yujiro Hanma, the strongest creature on Earth.” Saitama looked back at his flyer. “Okay. Cool.” Yujiro’s grin faltered slightly. Nobody had ever reacted to him like that.
“Fight me,” Yujiro said. Saitama sighed and folded the flyer. “Sure. But I have a coupon that expires at five.”
Round One
Yujiro threw the hardest punch he had ever thrown in his life, a blow that had broken armies and gods. It hit Saitama in the face. Saitama’s head turned slightly. He blinked. “Huh,” he said. “That was actually pretty strong.” Yujiro stared at him, his fist still against the bald head.
He threw another, and another, a combination of strikes that would have killed the Hulk. Saitama stood there and took them, looking mildly interested, as though he were watching a moderately exciting television programme. His cape fluttered slightly in the wind from the blows.
Yujiro stopped and stepped back. For the first time in his entire life, he was afraid. And he was overjoyed.
The Turn
Yujiro Hanma had spent his whole life looking for someone stronger than himself. He had fought armies, gods, monsters. Every one of them had fallen. He had begun to believe he would die without ever meeting his equal. And now, in a park in City Z, he had found someone so far beyond him that he could not even measure the distance.
He laughed, louder than he had ever laughed, tears running down his face. Saitama watched him, a little concerned. “Are you okay?” Yujiro wiped his eyes. “You do not understand,” he said. “I have been searching my whole life for this.”
Saitama nodded slowly. He did understand, actually. He had been searching for the opposite his whole life.
The Finish
Yujiro charged one last time, with everything he had ever been, every fight, every victory, every year of being the strongest. Saitama threw a normal punch. Not a serious one. Just a normal punch. It hit Yujiro in the chest, and the Ogre flew across the park, through three trees and a fountain, and landed on his back in the grass.
He lay there, staring up at the sky, unable to move, laughing weakly. Saitama walked over and looked down at him. “Sorry,” he said. “I didn’t hit too hard, did I?” Yujiro shook his head, grinning through his blood. “Not hard enough,” he whispered. “I wanted to see your serious punch.” Saitama looked uncomfortable. “Nobody wants that.”
He checked his watch. Four fifty-two. “I gotta go. Coupon.” He jogged off toward the supermarket. Yujiro lay in the park until the sun went down, completely, perfectly happy. The strongest creature on Earth had finally lost, and it had been the best moment of his life.
