The Arena

Yujiro came to the Grand Line because he heard of a pirate who had defeated emperors of the sea, and he found him on a tropical island eating a whole roasted boar. Luffy looked up at the giant red-haired man with the scary grin. “Woah! You’re huge! Are you a giant? Are you hungry?”

Yujiro looked at the skinny young man in the straw hat and almost laughed. “They say you defeated emperors.” Luffy nodded, his mouth full. “Yeah! A few!” Yujiro cracked his knuckles. “Then show me.” Luffy swallowed, grinned and stood up. “Okay! But I’m gonna win!”

Yujiro laughed. He had heard that before.

Round One

Yujiro threw a punch that would have broken a tank. It hit Luffy in the chest, and Luffy’s rubber body stretched backwards like a slingshot, all the way into the jungle, and then snapped back, flying straight at Yujiro and headbutting him in the face. Yujiro staggered, astonished.

He threw another punch, harder. Luffy stretched again, bounced again, laughed again. Yujiro’s blows, the blows that had broken soldiers, fighters and armies, did nothing to a body made of rubber. They just bounced.

Yujiro stopped and stared. Then he started laughing so hard he had to put his hands on his knees. “Rubber,” he said. “Rubber!”

The Turn

Yujiro was a genius of combat, and he adapted. If blunt force bounced, he would grapple. He caught Luffy, wrapped him up in a hold that would have broken any human spine, and squeezed. Luffy’s rubber body stretched in his arms like a toy. Yujiro tied him in a knot. Luffy untied himself, laughing.

Then Luffy’s arm turned black and hard as steel. Armament Haki. He hit Yujiro in the jaw with a Haki-coated fist, and this time Yujiro felt it, a blow with the full weight of a pirate who had fought emperors behind it. He flew across the beach into the sea.

He came out of the water, bleeding and grinning. “Now,” he said, “you are fighting seriously.”

The Finish

Luffy went into Gear Fourth, his body swelling into a bouncing armoured giant, and then into Gear Five, his hair turning white, his laughter ringing across the island. He grabbed the beach and swung it like a blanket, wrapping Yujiro in sand, and slammed him into the sea again and again.

Yujiro fought back with everything he had, magnificent and furious, but he was fighting a cartoon, a body that bent the rules of reality itself. When Luffy finally hit him with a giant Haki-coated fist the size of a house, Yujiro was driven into the sand and stayed there, staring up at the sky, laughing weakly.

Luffy dropped out of Gear Five and sat down beside him, panting. “You’re really strong!” he said. “Strongest guy who wasn’t an emperor!” Yujiro laughed. “Your body is ridiculous.” Luffy grinned. “I know! Want some meat?” Yujiro, for the first time in his life, accepted food from a man who had beaten him.

The verdict

Monkey D. Luffy wins

Yujiro is the far better fighter, but his blunt force bounces off a rubber body, Luffy’s Haki-coated fists genuinely hurt him, and Gear Five turns the fight into something no amount of strength can solve.

  • Rubber bodyYujiro’s blunt strikes do nothing.
  • Armament HakiLuffy’s coated fists hurt even the Ogre.
  • Gear FiveReality-bending power beyond Yujiro’s reach.

How the rematch could go differently: A Yujiro who found a way to cut or burn instead of strike could finally hurt a rubber man.
