The Arena

Yujiro Hanma walked into a Vought press conference in New York, past security, past the cameras, past the screaming fans, and stopped in front of the stage where Homelander was giving a speech. The crowd went silent. Homelander kept smiling for the cameras. “Can I help you, citizen?”

Yujiro looked at him the way a lion looks at a house cat. “They say you are the strongest man in this world,” he said. Homelander’s smile widened. “That’s right.” Yujiro laughed, a deep, rumbling, contemptuous laugh. “Then this world is weak.”

The crowd gasped. Homelander’s eyes began to glow red. Nobody had ever laughed at him on live television before.

Round One

Homelander fired his heat vision straight at Yujiro’s chest. Yujiro took it, his skin smoking, and kept walking forward. Homelander fired again, harder. Yujiro’s skin blistered, and he did not slow down. He reached the stage, grabbed Homelander by the cape, and threw him through the Vought backdrop.

Homelander flew back out, furious, and hit Yujiro with a punch that sent him crashing through the front rows of seats. Yujiro rose, wiping blood from his lip, grinning. “Good,” he said. “You hit hard. Now let us see if you can take one.”

He hit Homelander in the stomach, and the most powerful superhero in the world doubled over in front of every camera in New York.

The Turn

Homelander was strong, almost invulnerable, and he could fly. He realised he did not have to stay close to this man. He rose into the air above the stage, laughing, and rained heat vision down on Yujiro from above. Yujiro stood in the burning stage and did not move. He simply looked up at Homelander and waited.

And Homelander, staring down at the man standing in his laser fire, refusing to run, refusing to flinch, began to feel something he had never felt on camera: doubt. Nobody had ever looked at him like that. Not with fear. With contempt.

“Come down,” Yujiro said, his voice carrying across the burning studio. “Or are you afraid?”

The Finish

Homelander came down. His pride would not let him do anything else. He flew at Yujiro at full speed, and Yujiro caught him by the throat in mid-air, held him there, and looked him in the eye. Homelander tried to break free and could not. He tried heat vision, point-blank, and Yujiro took it and squeezed.

Then Yujiro let him go, and Homelander fell to his knees on the burning stage, gasping. He was not badly hurt. His body was nearly invulnerable. But his mind had broken. He had been held helpless by a human being, on camera, in front of the whole world, and he had never been so afraid.

Yujiro looked down at him. “You are strong,” he said. “But you have never had to fight for anything. So you are nothing.” He walked out of the studio. Homelander knelt on the stage, staring at the cameras, unable to smile. For the first time in his life, the whole world saw his face without the mask.

The verdict

Yujiro Hanma wins

Homelander is nearly invulnerable and his heat vision hurts, but Yujiro takes it without flinching, and the Ogre wins the only way that matters against Homelander: by breaking his spirit on live television.

  • FearlessnessYujiro walks through heat vision without slowing.
  • Psychological dominanceHomelander has never faced anyone who was not afraid of him.
  • GrapplingOnce Yujiro catches him, Homelander cannot break free.

How the rematch could go differently: A Homelander who stayed in the sky and never came down could burn Yujiro from a distance forever, if his pride allowed it.
