The Arena

Big Boss had built Outer Heaven, a nation of soldiers that answered to no government. When his intelligence network reported a single man walking toward the fortress, unarmed, Big Boss laughed. Then the reports started coming in: the man had walked through the minefield, the outer wall, the first three battalions.

Big Boss went out to meet him personally. He found Yujiro Hanma standing in the main courtyard, surrounded by unconscious soldiers, a cigar he had taken from one of them in his mouth. “You’re the man the Americans signed a treaty with,” Big Boss said. Yujiro grinned. “And you are the man who built an army to defy them.”

Big Boss lit his own cigar. “Then we have something in common.” Yujiro laughed. “We will see.”

Round One

Big Boss did not attack with his fists. He was a soldier, and soldiers use every advantage. Snipers opened fire from the walls. Yujiro walked through the bullets, letting them bounce off his skin, and caught one sniper round in his teeth. He spat it out at Big Boss’s feet.

Big Boss nodded slowly and drew his knife. He closed in with CQC, the close-quarters combat style he had invented, the art of disarming and controlling any opponent. He caught Yujiro’s arm, twisted it, and tried to throw him over his hip. It was perfect technique. Yujiro did not move.

He simply stood there, rooted to the ground like a mountain, while one of the greatest soldiers in history tried to throw him and could not.

The Turn

CQC is the art of using an opponent’s strength against them, of controlling their balance and movement. It works on any human body. Yujiro’s body was not really a human body. Big Boss tried every technique he had invented, every throw, every lock, and Yujiro simply did not move unless he chose to.

Then Yujiro chose to. He grabbed Big Boss by the collar and threw him across the courtyard, through a supply truck and into the fortress wall. Big Boss rose from the rubble, bleeding, and looked at the Ogre with something he had not felt since the jungles of 1964: the sense that he was facing a force of nature.

He called in an air strike on his own courtyard.

The Finish

The missiles came down and turned the courtyard into an inferno. When the smoke cleared, Yujiro stood in the middle of the crater, his clothes burnt away, his skin scorched, grinning. He walked out of the fire toward Big Boss, who drew his pistol and fired every round he had.

Yujiro caught him by the throat, lifted him off the ground and held him there. Big Boss did not struggle. He simply looked into the Ogre’s eyes, calmly, the way a soldier looks at the end. Yujiro held him for a long moment, then set him down. “You fought with everything,” Yujiro said. “Even your own fortress.”

Big Boss rubbed his throat. “What do you want?” Yujiro shrugged. “I wanted to see the man who defies nations. I have seen him.” He walked out of Outer Heaven, past the rubble and the stunned soldiers. Big Boss watched him go, lit a new cigar and said to no one in particular, “Some things can’t be fought. Only survived.”

The verdict

Yujiro Hanma wins

Big Boss is one of the greatest soldiers in history and throws everything at Yujiro, from snipers and CQC to an air strike, but CQC needs a body that can be controlled, and Yujiro’s cannot be.

  • Uncontrollable bodyCQC cannot move Yujiro unless he allows it.
  • DurabilityBullets and missiles barely slow him.
  • StrengthOne throw ends the close-quarters fight.

How the rematch could go differently: There is no army Big Boss could build that would stop Yujiro, but he would certainly try.
