The Arena
Zoro got lost again, which surprised nobody, and walked out of a portal into a Gotham warehouse where a man in a red helmet was interrogating a drug dealer at gunpoint. Jason Todd looked at the green-haired swordsman with three blades. “Who the hell are you?” Zoro looked around. “Is this the way to the ship?”
Jason lowered his gun slightly. “No.” Zoro nodded and walked toward the wrong door. The drug dealer used the distraction to run, and Jason fired at him. Zoro, without thinking, drew a sword and cut the bullet in half in mid-air. The dealer escaped. Jason slowly turned his helmet toward Zoro.
“You just cost me a lead,” he said quietly. Zoro shrugged. “You were going to shoot an unarmed man in the back.” Jason raised both pistols. “That’s my business.”
Round One
Jason opened fire with both guns, a hail of bullets across the warehouse. Zoro drew all three swords and cut them out of the air, sparks flying as each one split in half. Jason switched to a shotgun. Zoro cut the spread of pellets apart with a single spinning slash.
Jason was not just a gunman. He had been trained by Batman, and he fought like it: grenades, smoke, close-quarters combat. He closed the distance and fought Zoro hand to hand, disarming him of one sword with a perfect wrist lock. Zoro, now with two swords, grinned. “You’re good.”
Jason kicked him in the chest. “You have no idea.”
The Turn
Jason retreated, triggering a remote bomb planted in the warehouse. The explosion roared toward Zoro, a wall of fire and shrapnel. Zoro planted his feet, crossed his swords, and swung. The slash split the explosion in half, the flames parting around him on either side.
Jason stared through his helmet. He had seen metahumans do impossible things. He had never seen a man cut an explosion with a sword. Zoro retrieved his third sword from the floor and put it in his mouth. “Okay,” he said through the hilt. “My turn.”
Jason reloaded. He was starting to realise this was not a fight he could win with bullets.
The Finish
Zoro attacked with Three Sword Style, and Jason could not keep up. Every bullet he fired was cut in half. Every grenade was sliced apart before it went off. Zoro was faster with a blade than Jason was with a trigger, and he closed the distance in a single bound and knocked both pistols out of Jason’s hands.
Jason fought on with his fists, and he was very good, but Zoro had fought monsters, giants and the world’s greatest swordsman. He swept Jason’s legs and pinned him to the warehouse floor with the flat of a blade against his throat.
“Killing people isn’t justice,” Zoro said, surprisingly calmly. Jason laughed bitterly under his helmet. “You sound like Batman.” Zoro frowned. “Who’s that?” Jason started laughing for real. Zoro let him up, then asked him for directions. Jason pointed him to the docks. Zoro walked confidently in the opposite direction.
The verdict
Roronoa Zoro wins
Red Hood is a Batman-trained fighter with an arsenal of guns and explosives, but Zoro can cut bullets and even explosions in half, and in close quarters his Three Sword Style outclasses Jason completely.
- Cutting bulletsZoro neutralises Jason’s main weapon.
- SwordsmanshipThree Sword Style is faster than any trigger.
- Superhuman durabilityZoro shrugs off blows that would stop a normal man.
How the rematch could go differently: A Red Hood who used a sniper rifle from a kilometre away, before Zoro knew he was there, could end it with one shot.
