The Arena

Gohan was studying on a quiet island, a pile of books beside him, when a green-haired swordsman stumbled out of the forest, clearly lost. Zoro looked at the young man with glasses and a book on botany and asked, irritated, which way the sea was. Gohan pointed. “That way. About a kilometre.” Zoro nodded and walked in the opposite direction.

Gohan watched him go, then sensed something: a fighting spirit so sharp it was almost visible. He put down his book. “You’re a swordsman,” he called out. Zoro stopped and turned. “You’re a fighter. I can tell.” Gohan smiled awkwardly. “I don’t really like fighting anymore.” Zoro drew three swords. “Too bad.”

He put one sword in his mouth. Gohan sighed and took off his glasses.

Round One

Zoro attacked with Three Sword Style, a whirlwind of blades that cut the grass around them into confetti. Gohan dodged them, but slowly at first, out of practice, and one blade nicked his cheek. He touched the cut, surprised. Zoro grinned. “You’re fast. But you’re rusty.”

Gohan began to wake up. His movements sharpened, his body remembering years of training with Piccolo. He dodged the next combination entirely and tapped Zoro in the chest with an open palm. Zoro flew back twenty metres and landed on his feet, astonished. He had not even seen the hand move.

Zoro coated his blades in Armament Haki, his swords turning black. “Okay,” he said. “Now I’m taking this seriously.”

The Turn

Zoro unleashed Asura, his ultimate technique, and an illusion of a demon with three faces and six arms appeared around him, wielding nine swords. The blades came from every direction at once, and Gohan was cut across the arm and the chest. He stepped back, bleeding, and something in his eyes changed.

His hair turned gold. Then lightning crackled around him, and it turned gold again, brighter. Super Saiyan Two. The power rolling off him flattened the grass for a hundred metres. Zoro felt it press down on him like the weight of the ocean, and grinned through gritted teeth.

“Now that,” Zoro said, “is a real opponent.” He charged.

The Finish

Zoro’s strongest attack, a cut that can slice through buildings, hit Gohan’s forearm and stopped there, drawing only a thin line of blood. Gohan grabbed the blade between two fingers. Zoro pulled with everything he had, and the sword did not move. Then Gohan struck, a single punch to Zoro’s stomach, controlled and precise.

Zoro folded in half and dropped to his knees, all three swords falling to the grass. He tried to rise. His body would not obey him. Gohan’s hair returned to black, and he knelt down beside the swordsman, worried. “Sorry. I didn’t hit too hard, did I?”

Zoro laughed, coughing. “You’re… a monster… with glasses.” Gohan smiled awkwardly and put his glasses back on. “I get that a lot.” He helped Zoro to his feet and pointed him toward the sea again. Zoro thanked him and walked confidently in the wrong direction. Gohan let him go. Some things, he decided, could not be fixed by fighting.

The verdict

Gohan wins

Zoro is one of the greatest swordsmen alive and his Haki-coated blades and Asura cut Gohan, but Super Saiyan Two Gohan’s power is far beyond anything Zoro can cut through.

  • Power scaleSuper Saiyan Two is on a different level to Zoro’s strength.
  • SpeedGohan moves faster than Zoro can follow.
  • DurabilityZoro’s strongest cut only scratches Gohan’s arm.

How the rematch could go differently: A Gohan who stayed in base form and refused to transform, as he often does, could genuinely lose to Zoro’s swordsmanship.
