The Arena
Denji was hired to clear a devil out of an abandoned shopping mall, and Reigen Arataka, the self-proclaimed greatest psychic of the century, had been hired to exorcise the same building. Reigen had sent his assistant to do it. The two of them met in the food court: a boy with a bowl haircut and a scruffy teenager with sharp teeth eating a stale sandwich.
“Are you the devil?” Mob asked politely. Denji pointed at himself. “Me? I’m a devil hunter. Wait, are you the devil?” They looked at each other for a long time. Then a lamp fell from the ceiling and Denji pulled the cord on his chest. Chainsaws erupted from his head and arms.
Mob’s meter jumped from 0% to 30%. He really did not like loud noises.
Round One
Denji charged, roaring, chainsaws screaming. Mob raised a hand and stopped him in mid-air, holding him there like a fly in amber. Denji wriggled, swore, and revved his chainsaws as loud as they would go. Mob winced at the noise. 50%.
He threw Denji across the food court and into a fountain. Denji got up, soaking wet, and charged again from a different angle. Mob stopped him again. Denji was not smart, but he was persistent, and he kept coming back, again and again, and each time he got a little closer.
One chainsaw finally reached Mob’s barrier and ground against it, sparks flying. Mob looked worried. 70%.
The Turn
The chainsaw broke through the barrier and nicked Mob’s arm, just barely. A thin line of blood appeared. Mob stared at it. Denji, surprised he had actually hit something, paused. “Uh. Sorry?” Mob’s meter went straight to 100%.
The mall began to shake. Escalators tore loose from their supports. Shop windows exploded outward. Every loose object in the building rose into the air and hung there, trembling, and in the middle of it all, Mob floated, his eyes blank and glowing.
Denji looked around at the hundreds of floating objects and the boy at the centre of the storm and said, very quietly, “Oh, crap.”
The Finish
Denji did the only thing he could think of. He charged straight at Mob, through the storm of floating debris, chainsaws screaming, and got hit by about two hundred things at once. He went down under a pile of mannequins, shopping trolleys and a vending machine, and did not get back up.
Mob’s meter slowly fell back to zero. He walked over to the pile and began lifting things off it, worried. At the bottom, Denji lay flat on his back, chainsaws retracted, covered in snacks from the broken vending machine. He was eating one.
“You won,” Denji mumbled through a mouthful of chocolate. “That’s okay. These are free.” Mob sat down beside him and, after a moment, picked up a snack too. They sat in the wrecked food court eating vending machine chocolate, and it was, for both of them, the most normal afternoon they had had in months.
The verdict
Mob wins
Denji is relentless and his chainsaws can grind through Mob’s barrier, but Mob’s telekinesis keeps him at a distance, and at 100% the boy can turn an entire mall into a weapon.
- TelekinesisMob stops Denji in mid-air and throws him across rooms.
- ScaleAt 100% he controls everything in the building.
- RangeDenji has to reach Mob to hurt him; Mob never has to reach Denji.
How the rematch could go differently: A Denji fully transformed into the Chainsaw Man devil, capable of erasing concepts, would be an entirely different threat.
