The Arena
Denji wandered through a strange portal looking for food and found a run-down bar in the middle of a desert, where a huge chalk-white alien in a leather jacket was eating a plate of ribs the size of a car tyre. Denji sat down next to him and stared at the ribs. “Are you gonna finish those?”
Lobo slowly turned his red eyes toward the scrawny kid. “Get lost, runt.” Denji did not get lost. He grabbed a rib and bit into it. Lobo stared at him in disbelief. Nobody had ever stolen food from the Main Man. Most people did not survive making eye contact with him.
“Bastich,” Lobo growled, standing up. “You just signed your death warrant.” Denji pulled the cord on his chest, and chainsaws erupted from his head and arms. Lobo grinned. “Oh, this is gonna be fun.”
Round One
They demolished the bar in about thirty seconds. Denji’s chainsaws tore into Lobo’s chest, spraying blood across the room. Lobo laughed, grabbed Denji by the head and smashed him through the bar counter. Denji got up, drank some of Lobo’s blood off the floor to heal, and charged again.
Lobo had never fought anything like a chainsaw devil. He had never fought anyone who healed by drinking blood either. Denji cut off Lobo’s arm. Lobo picked it up, laughed, and a new arm grew back. The severed one grew a new Lobo, which started punching Denji too.
Denji stared at the two Lobos. “That is so unfair.”
The Turn
Denji’s chainsaws spilled a lot of blood, and Lobo’s regeneration is famous: every drop of his blood can grow into a new Lobo. Within minutes, there were a dozen of them, all laughing, all swinging chains, all coming for the chainsaw kid. Denji cut through them, and each cut made more.
He was fighting an army of the most violent man in the universe, and every time he swung his chainsaws, he made the army bigger. He started to realise that his entire fighting style, cutting things into pieces, was the worst possible strategy against Lobo.
“Okay,” Denji said, backing away from twenty Lobos. “I made a mistake.”
The Finish
Twenty Lobos dogpiled him at once. Denji disappeared under a mountain of chalk-white muscle and leather jackets. When they finally climbed off, he was lying on the floor of the ruined bar, his chainsaws retracted, too battered and drained to rise.
The original Lobo looked down at him, then absorbed the other Lobos back into himself one by one, grinning. “Not bad, runt. Nobody ever made me split into twenty before.” Denji groaned. “I just wanted a rib.” Lobo laughed so hard he had to sit down.
Then, to everyone’s surprise, he tossed Denji the last rib. “You fight like a Czarnian,” Lobo said. “Stupid and with no fear. I respect that.” Denji ate the rib, lying on the floor. It was the best rib he had ever eaten. He told Power about it later. She did not believe a word of it.
