The Arena

Tanjiro Kamado stepped off a strange train into a deserted station in modern Tokyo, and the smell hit him immediately: blood, hunger, and something not quite human. He followed it to the end of the platform, where a young man with white hair sat on a bench in the rain, a black eye patch over one eye.

Tanjiro drew his sword. “You’re a demon,” he said. Kaneki looked up slowly. “I’m a ghoul. It’s… complicated.” Tanjiro sniffed the air again. The smell was confusing: hunger and guilt and sadness, the smell of someone who hated what he was. He had smelled it only once before, on his sister Nezuko.

He hesitated. Kaneki saw it, and stood up. “You don’t want to fight me,” he said. “But you will, if I let you.”

Round One

Tanjiro attacked with Water Breathing, flowing strikes aimed to disable, not kill. Kaneki’s kagune burst from his back, four crimson tentacles, and blocked the blade. Tanjiro was surprised by their strength. Kaneki was surprised by the boy’s skill. Neither of them was really trying to kill the other.

They fought along the platform, Tanjiro dodging the tentacles by smell, cutting them with precise strikes. Kaneki regenerated every cut almost instantly. Tanjiro switched to Sun Breathing, his blade bursting into flame, and the fire burned the kagune in a way normal cuts could not.

Kaneki hissed in pain and stepped back. The burned tentacle regenerated slowly. Tanjiro saw it and felt hope for the first time.

The Turn

Kaneki’s eyes changed. His kakugan flared red, and his kagune multiplied, a storm of crimson tentacles filling the station. He was not trying to kill Tanjiro. But he was a ghoul, and ghouls are stronger, faster and tougher than any human, and he was done letting the boy push him around.

Tanjiro dodged and cut and burned, using every Sun Breathing form he knew. He was magnificent. But for every tentacle he burned, three more came at him, and Kaneki’s regeneration was faster than anything the demon slayer had ever seen.

A kagune caught him across the chest and threw him against a pillar. He rose, coughing blood, and kept fighting.

The Finish

Tanjiro used his last strength for a final technique, Sunrise Countdown, thirteen forms in one unbroken dance. It tore through half of Kaneki’s kagune in a storm of fire. Kaneki staggered back, burned and bleeding. Then the kagune regrew, and Tanjiro, exhausted, could not lift his sword again.

Kaneki wrapped him gently in a tentacle and held him there, unable to move. He looked into the boy’s eyes and saw only exhaustion and stubbornness, no hatred at all. “You could smell it, couldn’t you?” Kaneki asked quietly. “That I didn’t want this.” Tanjiro nodded weakly.

Kaneki let him go and sat down beside him in the rain. “My sister is a demon,” Tanjiro said after a long silence. “She has never eaten a human.” Kaneki smiled sadly. “Then she is stronger than I am.” They sat together until the first train of the morning arrived, and neither of them said anything more.

The verdict

Ken Kaneki wins

Tanjiro’s Sun Breathing burns Kaneki’s kagune in a way normal cuts cannot, but Kaneki is stronger, faster and regenerates far more quickly, and he simply outlasts the demon slayer.

  • RegenerationKaneki heals faster than Tanjiro can cut.
  • KaguneMultiple tentacles overwhelm a single sword.
  • EnduranceTanjiro’s Sun Breathing drains him; Kaneki keeps going.

How the rematch could go differently: A Tanjiro with the demon slayer mark and a see-through world could find the core of Kaneki’s kagune and end it.
