The Arena

Kaoru Hanayama, the youngest yakuza boss in Tokyo, the man who never trained and never learned a single technique because he believed true men fight with nothing but their fists, wandered through a strange alley and came out in a hot-spring town in the ninja world. In the alley, a tall man with long white hair was peeking through a hole in a bathhouse fence.

Hanayama stopped and adjusted his glasses. “That,” he said quietly, “is not the behaviour of a man.” Jiraiya turned around, startled, then struck a dramatic pose. “I am the Gallant Jiraiya of Mount Myoboku, and this is research!” Hanayama removed his jacket and folded it neatly over a barrel. “Then I will teach you some manners.”

Jiraiya looked at the enormous young man in the white suit and sighed. “Today is not my day.”

Round One

Hanayama attacked with no technique at all, just a massive, swinging punch with his entire body behind it. Jiraiya dodged it, and the punch hit the bathhouse wall and brought half of it down. The women inside screamed. Jiraiya winced. “Now look what you’ve done!”

Hanayama grabbed him by the coat with one hand, his legendary grip strength crushing the fabric, and lifted him off the ground. Jiraiya slipped out of his coat like a snake shedding skin and landed behind him. Hanayama turned, unhurried, and punched again. Jiraiya blocked it and felt his arms go numb.

“You don’t have any technique at all,” Jiraiya said, impressed. Hanayama nodded. “I don’t need any.”

The Turn

Hanayama landed a punch that caught Jiraiya in the stomach and drove him through a fence. Jiraiya got up coughing, genuinely surprised. The young man was absurdly strong and took every blow without flinching. Jiraiya had seen tough men before. He had never seen anyone who simply refused to defend themselves and won anyway.

He bit his thumb and slammed his palm on the ground. Two tiny, ancient toads appeared on his shoulders, and his face changed, warts appearing around his eyes, his nose growing wider. Sage Mode. His senses expanded, his strength multiplied, and nature’s energy flowed through his body.

Hanayama looked at the toads, then at the transformed face, and adjusted his glasses. “You look ridiculous.” Jiraiya sighed. “Everybody says that.”

The Finish

In Sage Mode, Jiraiya was faster and stronger than Hanayama could follow. He dodged three punches, then struck with Frog Kata, a taijutsu style that uses nature energy to hit beyond the fist itself. The invisible force threw Hanayama back across the alley. He rose, bleeding, and walked forward again.

Jiraiya formed a Rasengan, a spinning sphere of chakra, and drove it into the ground at Hanayama’s feet. The blast threw the yakuza boss into a pile of crates. Hanayama tried to rise. His legs would not hold him. He sat in the wreckage and adjusted his cracked glasses with great dignity.

“You are a disgrace as a man,” Hanayama said. “But you are a very good fighter.” Jiraiya laughed and offered him a bottle of sake. “Want to hear about my novels?” Hanayama declined. Jiraiya told him anyway. It took three hours, and Hanayama, who had never once backed down from anything, finally surrendered.

The verdict

Jiraiya wins

Hanayama’s grip and raw durability are legendary and he lands hard blows, but Jiraiya is a Sannin with decades of experience, Sage Mode multiplies his strength and senses, and the Rasengan is beyond anything a human fist can block.

  • Sage ModeNature energy makes Jiraiya faster and stronger than Hanayama.
  • TechniqueJiraiya has a lifetime of jutsu; Hanayama refuses all technique.
  • RasenganA chakra sphere that no human durability can withstand.

How the rematch could go differently: In a sumo ring where Jiraiya could not use jutsu, Hanayama’s grip and strength would make him the favourite.

Who do you think wins?

Who would win in a fight between Kaoru Hanayama and Jiraiya?

Jiraiya wins. Hanayama’s grip and raw durability are legendary and he lands hard blows, but Jiraiya is a Sannin with decades of experience, Sage Mode multiplies his strength and senses, and the Rasengan is beyond anything a human fist can block.
