The Arena
Kakashi Hatake arrived in the Shinshinkai dojo by accident, reading his orange book, and found himself surrounded by a hundred karate students in white uniforms. At the front of the hall, a bald man with an eyepatch and fists like hammers stood up slowly. Doppo Orochi, the Tiger Killer, had never seen a ninja before.
“You came into my dojo without bowing,” Doppo said. Kakashi closed his book. “Sorry. I got lost on the road of life.” The students gasped. Doppo laughed, a big, booming laugh. “I like you. Show me what you can do.” Kakashi sighed and put his book in his pocket.
Doppo assumed his stance. His fists, conditioned for decades on stone and wood, looked like they were carved out of granite.
Round One
Doppo attacked with a straight punch, the kind of strike that had killed tigers. Kakashi dodged it, and the punch hit the wooden pillar behind him and split it in half. Kakashi raised an eyebrow. “That would have hurt.” Doppo grinned and attacked again, a flurry of strikes and kicks, each one perfectly balanced and devastating.
Kakashi dodged most of them and blocked the rest, and even the blocks numbed his arms. Doppo was a true master of karate, with perfect technique built over a lifetime. He landed a kick to Kakashi’s ribs that sent the ninja sliding across the dojo floor.
Kakashi rolled to his feet and lifted his headband. His left eye turned red, and three black tomoe began to spin.
The Turn
With the Sharingan, Kakashi could see every movement in Doppo’s body before it happened: the shift of weight before a punch, the tension before a kick. He began to dodge everything. Then he began to copy. He threw a straight punch exactly like Doppo’s, perfect form, perfect balance, and hit the master square in the chest.
Doppo staggered back, astonished. The students went silent. Someone had just used Shinshinkai karate against its own founder, and done it better than any student in the dojo. Doppo looked at the red eye and understood. “You copy what you see,” he said. Kakashi nodded. “Bad habit.”
Doppo laughed again, delighted, and attacked with his secret technique, a strike he had never shown anyone.
The Finish
Doppo’s secret strike came from an angle Kakashi had never seen. It caught him on the shoulder and drove him into the floor, cracking the boards. For an instant, the master had won. Then the Kakashi on the floor puffed into smoke. Shadow clone. The real Kakashi was behind Doppo, lightning crackling in his hand.
He did not use the Chidori on Doppo’s body. He drove it into the floor beside him, and the shockwave threw the karate master across the dojo and into the wall, stunned, his muscles locked by the electric current. Doppo slid down the wall and sat there, unable to move.
Kakashi pulled his headband back down and offered a hand. Doppo took it and rose slowly. “Lightning, clones and a stolen style,” he said. “You cheat.” Kakashi smiled behind his mask. “I’m a ninja. That’s the whole job.” Doppo laughed so hard he had to sit down again, and invited Kakashi to stay for dinner.
