The Arena

Vought opened a research facility in the Canadian Rockies to study a mutant they had captured: a short, angry man with an unbreakable skeleton. Logan broke out on the second day, tore through the guards, and was halfway to the exit when Homelander landed in the corridor in front of him.

“You’re Vought property now,” Homelander said, smiling. Logan popped his claws. “I’ve been somebody’s property before, bub. Didn’t take.” Homelander looked at the claws with interest. “Adamantium. They said you can’t be killed.” Logan grinned. “Lot of people tried.” Homelander’s eyes began to glow. “I’m not a lot of people.”

He fired. Logan charged straight through the beam.

Round One

The heat vision burned through Logan’s skin and muscle, down to the bone, and stopped at the adamantium. Logan kept coming, his body healing as fast as it burned, and drove his claws into Homelander’s chest. They did not go in. They scraped across his skin like knives across steel.

Logan stared. Nothing had ever stopped his claws. Homelander laughed and threw him through three walls of the facility. Logan got up, healing, and charged again. He slashed at Homelander’s eyes, his throat, his stomach, looking for any weak point. There was none.

Homelander caught him by the arm and hurled him through the roof of the facility and into the snow outside.

The Turn

Logan kept getting up. Homelander burned him to the bone, and he healed. Homelander broke every bone in his body, and they knit back together. Homelander could not kill him. Nothing could. And Logan could not hurt Homelander either. It was a stalemate between two men who could not lose.

Then Homelander smiled, a cold, cruel smile. He grabbed Logan by the collar and flew straight up, faster and faster, through the clouds, through the atmosphere, until the sky turned black and the stars came out. Logan, gasping, freezing, realised what Homelander was doing.

“You can’t die,” Homelander said, his breath turning to frost. “So I won’t kill you. I’ll just put you somewhere you can never come back from.”

The Finish

Logan slashed at him in the thin air, and his claws scraped harmlessly off Homelander’s skin. Homelander held him at the edge of space, watching his healing factor struggle against the cold and the vacuum, watching him pass out and wake up and pass out again. It was the cruellest thing anyone had ever done to Logan, and he had been through a lot.

In the end, Homelander did not leave him in space. Not out of mercy, but because he wanted Vought to have him back. He dropped Logan into the Pacific Ocean from orbit, and Logan hit the water at a speed that should have killed anyone. He healed. He swam. It took him a week to reach the shore.

He walked up the beach, battered and furious, and lit a cigar he had somehow kept dry. He had lost. He had never been able to hurt the man. But he was alive, and he was free, and he made a mental note: next time, he would bring help. A lot of help.

The verdict

Homelander wins

Wolverine cannot be killed, but his adamantium claws cannot pierce Homelander’s skin, and Homelander can fly him somewhere his healing factor cannot help: the edge of space.

  • InvulnerabilityAdamantium claws scrape off Homelander’s skin.
  • FlightHe takes Logan into the vacuum of space.
  • CrueltyHomelander finds a way to defeat a man who cannot die.

How the rematch could go differently: A Logan with a weapon that can pierce Homelander’s skin, like the Muramasa blade, would make it a very different fight.
