The Arena

Vought expanded into a new market: Gotham City. Homelander arrived with a camera crew, promising to clean up the streets that a “man in a bat costume” had failed to fix for years. He gave a speech on the steps of city hall, smiling, and announced that Gotham’s vigilante was a criminal who should turn himself in.

That night, Batman found him on a rooftop, alone, without his camera crew. “You murdered three people this week and called it crime-fighting,” Batman said. Homelander smiled. “I prevented three crimes. Permanently.” Batman’s jaw tightened. “That stops tonight.”

Homelander laughed. “Oh, you’re adorable. A man in a costume, with no powers, threatening me.” His eyes began to glow red.

Round One

Homelander fired his heat vision, and Batman was already moving, diving behind an air conditioning unit as the beams cut it in half. He threw a smoke pellet and vanished into the cloud. Homelander flew through it, using his X-ray vision, and found him immediately. Batman was waiting with a sonic emitter.

The emitter shrieked at a frequency designed to overwhelm super-hearing. Homelander clutched his ears and staggered. Batman hit him with a combination of strikes aimed at every nerve cluster in the human body. They did nothing. Homelander’s body was nearly invulnerable.

He recovered and backhanded Batman across the rooftop. Batman rose, his ribs cracked, and adjusted his plan.

The Turn

Batman had spent years preparing for a rogue Kryptonian: kryptonite, red sun emitters, magic-based weapons. He tried them all. The kryptonite did nothing. The red sun emitter did nothing. Homelander was not from Krypton. He had been made in a lab by Vought, and his powers had no known weakness at all.

Homelander understood what Batman was trying to do and laughed with genuine delight. “You prepared for someone else,” he said. “Some alien boy scout. I’m worse than that.” He flew at Batman and drove him through the rooftop, through three floors, into the street below.

Batman lay in the rubble, his armour shattered. He had planned for a hero who had gone bad. He had not planned for a man who had never been good.

The Finish

Homelander landed in the street, his cape billowing, and looked down at Batman, broken in the rubble. He raised his hand, his eyes glowing, ready to finish it. Then he noticed the small red light on Batman’s belt. A camera. Recording. Broadcasting live to every screen in Gotham.

Batman, barely conscious, looked up at him. “The whole city,” he said, “just watched you try to kill a man in the street.” Homelander froze. His eyes stopped glowing. He looked around at the windows, the phones, the faces, every one of them watching. He smiled for them, a terrible, forced smile.

He flew away without finishing it. He had won the fight. Batman was too broken to stand. But Vought’s Gotham launch was cancelled the next morning, and Homelander’s approval ratings fell lower than they had ever been. Batman, in his hospital bed, considered it a partial victory.

The verdict

Homelander wins

Batman’s preparation is legendary, but every anti-Kryptonian weapon he owns is useless against a lab-made superhuman with no known weakness, and Homelander wins the fight, though not the cameras.

  • No known weaknessKryptonite and red sun emitters do nothing.
  • Power gapHomelander is nearly invulnerable; Batman is human.
  • Wrong preparationBatman planned for a hero gone bad, not a man who was never good.

How the rematch could go differently: With weeks to study Homelander specifically, and a way to exploit his fragile psychology, Batman might find the weapon he needs.
