The Arena

A Viltrumite warship entered Earth’s orbit, and Thragg, Grand Regent of the Viltrum Empire, looked down at the planet below with cold interest. He had come to see if this world was worth conquering. Then he noticed a single figure flying up through the atmosphere toward his ship, a man in a flag cape. Homelander.

Homelander floated in front of the warship, smiling. “Whoever you are, this planet is mine. Turn around.” Thragg stepped out of the airlock into the vacuum of space and looked at him with contempt. “Yours?” he said. “You are a laboratory experiment that someone gave a cape. I have met a thousand like you, and I have killed all of them.”

Homelander’s smile vanished. Nobody had ever spoken to him like that.

Round One

Homelander fired his heat vision at Thragg’s face. Thragg did not dodge. The beam scorched his cheek, and he looked at Homelander with the faint disappointment of a teacher grading a bad exam. Then he moved, faster than Homelander could see, and hit him in the stomach. Homelander folded in half and tumbled back toward Earth.

He caught himself in the upper atmosphere and flew back up, furious. They fought in orbit, and Homelander threw everything he had: heat vision, punches, his full strength. Thragg blocked most of it with casual precision and answered with blows that Homelander felt in his bones, blows that had broken Viltrumite warriors for centuries.

Homelander had never been hit like this. He had never been outclassed like this.

The Turn

Homelander tried his favourite tactic: he threatened the planet. He turned toward Earth, his eyes glowing, ready to burn a city to make Thragg back off. Thragg laughed. “Go ahead. I came here to conquer it. You would only save me the trouble.”

Homelander froze. His only trick had never failed before, because his opponents had always cared about the people below. Thragg did not care at all. He was colder, older and more ruthless than Homelander had ever been. He was everything Homelander pretended to be.

“You are not a god,” Thragg said, floating closer. “You are a child who was told he was special and never had to prove it.”

The Finish

Homelander screamed and attacked one last time, all his rage, all his fear. Thragg caught his fist, twisted his arm behind his back and held him there in orbit, helpless, looking down at the blue planet below. Homelander struggled and could not move. For the first time in his life, someone was simply stronger.

“On Viltrum,” Thragg said quietly, “we kill the weak at birth. You would not have survived your first year.” He let go. Homelander tumbled back toward Earth, broken, burning through the atmosphere, and crashed into the Pacific Ocean far below.

Thragg watched him fall, then turned back to his ship. He looked at the planet for a long moment, then shook his head. A world whose strongest defender was a frightened child in a cape was not worth the trouble. He left Earth alone. Homelander, floating in the ocean, never learned that his defeat had saved the planet.

The verdict

Thragg wins

Homelander is one of the most powerful beings on his Earth, but Thragg is the Grand Regent of a warrior empire, faster, stronger and centuries more experienced, and he does not care about the hostages Homelander always relies on.

  • Viltrumite powerThragg outclasses Homelander in speed, strength and durability.
  • ExperienceCenturies of war against beings far stronger than humans.
  • No hostagesHomelander’s trick of threatening civilians does not work on someone who wants to conquer them anyway.

How the rematch could go differently: There is no version of Homelander in canon who could defeat the Grand Regent of Viltrum.
