The Arena
Homelander came to New York for a Vought product launch and saw a young hero in red and blue swinging between skyscrapers, helping old ladies cross the street, stopping muggers, rescuing cats, and asking for nothing in return. No sponsors. No merchandise. No contract. Homelander found it deeply offensive.
He flew up and hovered in front of Spider-Man as he swung past, and Peter nearly crashed into a building. “Whoa! Hey! You’re flying! That’s new!” Homelander smiled. “You’re working without a contract, son. That’s not how heroes work.” Peter landed on a ledge. “Uh, I think that’s exactly how heroes work.”
Homelander’s smile stayed fixed. His eyes began to glow. Peter’s spider-sense screamed louder than it ever had.
Round One
The heat vision cut through the building where Peter had been standing. He was already gone, flipping away, his spider-sense warning him a split second before each beam. He fired webs at Homelander’s eyes. Homelander burned them away. He swung around a building and kicked Homelander in the back of the head. It did nothing.
Peter was faster in short bursts, and his spider-sense meant Homelander could not hit him by surprise. But Homelander could fly, could see through walls, and was nearly invulnerable. Peter landed blow after blow and none of them mattered.
He fired a web line, swung around, and realised he had no idea how to hurt someone who could not be hurt.
The Turn
Homelander got bored of chasing him. He turned his heat vision toward the crowd on the street below. Peter saw it, and his spider-sense screamed, and he did the only thing he could. He swung directly into the beam’s path, shielding the people below, and took the heat vision across his back.
He fell, his suit burning, and caught himself on a web line just above the street. The crowd below was safe. Peter hung there, gasping, his back blistered. Homelander floated down, amused. “You took that for them? They don’t even know your name.”
Peter looked up at him, his mask half burned away. “That’s kind of the point,” he said.
The Finish
Homelander grabbed him by the throat, lifted him into the sky, and dropped him. Peter fell, his spider-sense useless against a fall from that height, and webbed a building at the last second, slowing himself enough to survive. He hit the rooftop hard and lay there, unable to rise.
Homelander landed beside him, smiling. “You’re a nobody, kid. No sponsors, no fans, no contract. Nobody will remember you.” Peter laughed weakly. “Maybe. But everybody down there went home tonight.” Homelander stared at him. Then he flew away, irritated, unable to explain why the kid had made him so angry.
The next morning, Peter woke up in a hospital bed, his aunt May beside him. The newspapers were full of a story about a masked kid who had shielded a crowd from Homelander’s heat vision with his own body. Nobody knew his name. That was fine. Homelander read the story too, and threw the paper across the room.
