The Arena
Light Yagami arrived in a world where superheroes were corporate products, and the most famous of them all was a man called Homelander, worshipped by millions, owned by a company called Vought. Light watched the news for an hour and saw everything he needed: a man with absolute power, no accountability, and a body count that was quietly covered up.
He saw something else too. Homelander was on television constantly: his face, his smile, his name in every headline. Light had never had a target so easy to identify. He opened the Death Note and smiled. “The most powerful man in the world,” he murmured. “And the easiest to kill.”
There was only one problem. Homelander was not his real name.
Round One
Light needed a real name. He researched for days: Vought press releases, leaked documents, internet conspiracy forums. Nobody knew who Homelander really was. He had been raised in a Vought lab. He might not even have a real name. Light wrote “Homelander” in the notebook anyway, as a test. Nothing happened.
Meanwhile, Homelander noticed something. Several of his Vought colleagues, men who knew too much, had recently died of heart attacks. The same way. The same week. Homelander did not care about them. But he cared very much about someone in his city having power he did not understand.
He began to hunt. He could hear heartbeats across the city. He listened for one that sounded guilty.
The Turn
Light got desperate and brilliant at the same time. He hacked into Vought’s internal servers, using an executive’s password he had taken by manipulating a frightened employee, and found a sealed file on the Homelander project. Inside was a single sheet of paper: a lab record, and a name. John.
Light read it twice, then smiled slowly. He had the face, from a thousand television appearances. Now he had the name. All he needed was the surname, if there was one. He kept reading. There was one.
At the same moment, across the city, Homelander heard a heartbeat in a hotel room, a young man’s heartbeat, calm and excited at the same time. He flew toward it.
The Finish
Homelander crashed through the hotel window, glass exploding into the room, his eyes glowing red. Light was sitting at a desk, a black notebook open in front of him, a pen in his hand. He did not look up. He was writing. “Who are you?” Homelander demanded, raising his hand.
Light finished writing and set down the pen. He looked up at the most powerful man in the world and checked his watch. “Thirty-five seconds,” he said. Homelander laughed. “Thirty-five seconds until what?” Light smiled. “Until it doesn’t matter how strong you are.”
Homelander stopped laughing. He clutched his chest. For the first time in his life, something inside him was failing, and nothing in his body could stop it. He fell to his knees on the hotel carpet, his eyes wide with terror. Light closed the notebook. “Invulnerable,” he said quietly, “is not the same as immortal.” He walked out of the room and did not look back.
The verdict
Light Yagami wins
Homelander is nearly invulnerable to physical harm, but the Death Note does not care about strength: it only needs a face and a name, and Light finds Homelander’s real name buried in Vought’s files.
- The Death NoteIt kills regardless of power or durability.
- ResearchLight finds Homelander’s real name in a sealed Vought file.
- A famous faceHomelander’s fame gives Light everything else he needs.
How the rematch could go differently: A Homelander who found Light even five minutes earlier, before the name was discovered, would end it in a heartbeat.
