The Arena
Homelander came through a rift into a world with its own superheroes and saw a young man in a blue-and-yellow suit flying above a small town. Something about him felt familiar: the power, the flight, the way the people below looked up at him. Homelander flew up to meet him, smiling. “You must be the local hero.”
Mark Grayson stopped in mid-air and looked at the man in the flag cape. Something about him felt familiar too. The smile that did not reach the eyes. The way he looked down at the town as though it belonged to him. Mark had seen that look before, on his own father’s face, right before Nolan tried to kill him.
“I know what you are,” Mark said quietly. Homelander’s smile stayed fixed. “And what’s that, son?” Mark clenched his fists. “Someone who thinks people are toys.”
Round One
Homelander struck first, heat vision straight at Mark’s chest, and Mark took it, his suit smoking, and flew through it to punch Homelander in the jaw. Homelander flew backwards across the sky, stunned. Nobody hit him first. He came back furious, and they traded blows above the town, shockwaves rattling the windows below.
Mark was half Viltrumite, built for war, and he hit with the strength of a species that had conquered empires. Homelander was a lab experiment, nearly invulnerable, and he had never had to fight anyone his equal. Mark had. Mark had fought his own father and lived.
Homelander hit Mark with everything he had, and Mark went down into the town square. He got up immediately.
The Turn
Homelander used his favourite weapon: words. “You’re weak,” he said, hovering over the square. “You care about them. That’s a weakness. You could rule this town, this world, and you choose to serve them.” He smiled. “Your father would be ashamed of you.”
Mark went very still. His father had said almost exactly that, over the ruins of a city, while beating him half to death. But Mark had survived that, and grown, and learned something his father never had. “My father was wrong,” Mark said. “And so are you.”
He flew up at Homelander faster than he had ever flown, and his fist hit Homelander in the stomach so hard the man in the flag cape doubled over in mid-air.
The Finish
Mark did not stop. He hit Homelander again and again, every blow carrying the memory of every person his father had hurt, every life he had failed to save, every time he had been told he was weak for caring. Homelander tried to fly away. Mark caught his cape and dragged him back.
He drove Homelander down into a field outside the town and pinned him there, his fist raised. Homelander looked up at him, and for the first time, the smile was gone. His eyes were wide with fear. “Please,” Homelander whispered. Mark stopped, his fist trembling in the air. He had heard that word from his own mouth once, begging his father.
He lowered his fist. “I’m not going to kill you,” he said. “That’s the difference between us.” He flew Homelander to the Global Defense Agency and handed him over to Cecil Stedman. Then he went home and sat on his roof for a long time, thinking about his father, and about how close he had come to becoming him.
The verdict
Invincible wins
Homelander and Invincible are close in raw power, but Mark is half Viltrumite, has fought a far deadlier version of Homelander in his own father, and his reasons for fighting give him strength Homelander never had.
- Viltrumite heritageMark is built for war and hits with imperial strength.
- ExperienceHe already survived a fight with his own father.
- ResolveHomelander’s words cannot break someone who has already heard them.
How the rematch could go differently: A younger, less experienced Mark, before his fight with Omni-Man, would be much more vulnerable to Homelander’s manipulation.
