The Arena

Frank Castle tracked a cartel’s weapons shipment deep into the jungles of Central America, to a fortress on top of a mountain where the cartel bought its rifles. The man selling them was not a criminal. He was a legend: Big Boss, the soldier who had founded his own private army, Outer Heaven.

Frank did not care about legends. He cared about the guns that ended up on American streets and the families those guns destroyed. He walked up the mountain at night with a rifle and enough explosives to level the fortress.

Big Boss was waiting for him on the outer wall, smoking a cigar. “You’re a soldier,” he said, without turning around. “I can tell by the way you walk.” Frank raised his rifle. “I was.”

Round One

Frank fired, and Big Boss dropped off the wall into the jungle, vanishing into the darkness. Frank followed, and for an hour the two of them hunted each other through the trees. Frank was a brilliant tactician with endless firepower. Big Boss had been fighting in jungles since before Frank was born.

Every trap Frank set, Big Boss avoided. Every ambush Big Boss planned, Frank anticipated. They traded gunfire across a river, a ravine, a ruined temple. Both of them were wounded, neither seriously, and both of them were quietly impressed.

Frank finally cornered him in the ruins of an old church, and they ran out of ammunition at the same moment.

The Turn

Frank drew his knife and charged. Big Boss met him with CQC, catching the blade arm, throwing Frank over his hip into a pillar. Frank rolled up and charged again, raw, brutal and relentless, a man fighting with years of rage. He caught Big Boss in the jaw with a punch that would have broken an ordinary man’s neck.

Big Boss staggered, shook it off, and did something unexpected. He put down his own knife. “I know that look,” he said quietly. “You lost someone. Your family.” Frank froze for half a second. Big Boss saw it. “The war took mine too. It does that to men like us.”

Frank roared and attacked again. He did not want understanding. He wanted the war to end, and the only way he knew to end it was to win.

The Finish

Big Boss stopped holding back. He disarmed Frank in a single movement, swept his legs and pinned him to the stone floor of the church with an arm lock that would break the elbow if Frank pushed against it. Frank pushed anyway. Big Boss eased off the lock just before the bone snapped.

“Your war isn’t with me,” Big Boss said. “The cartel is buying guns from me because their government is buying guns from yours. You can kill me tonight, and they will buy from someone else tomorrow.” Frank lay on the floor, breathing hard, saying nothing. He knew it was true. He had always known.

Big Boss let him go and walked to the door of the ruined church. “You want to end a war, Castle? Then come and build something better with me.” Frank watched him disappear into the jungle and did not follow. But he never forgot the offer, and that, Big Boss knew, was how every army begins.

The verdict

Big Boss wins

Frank Castle is a relentless, brilliant soldier, but Big Boss has more experience, invented the close-quarters style he uses to disarm Frank, and understands his enemy better than Frank understands himself.

  • CQCBig Boss disarms and controls Frank at close range.
  • Jungle experienceHe has fought on this terrain since before Frank was born.
  • Psychological insightHe reads Frank’s grief and uses it.

How the rematch could go differently: In a New York alley, with Frank’s full arsenal and home ground, the Punisher’s firepower would tip the scales.
