The Arena

The High Table placed a contract on a legendary soldier who had founded his own private army and was considered a threat to the balance of power. They sent their best. John Wick arrived at the abandoned airbase at dawn, his suit pressed, his pistol loaded, his face calm and tired.

Big Boss was waiting for him. He had known John was coming for three days. The fog rolled over the cracked runway, and an old man with an eyepatch and a grey beard stepped out of it with a knife in one hand and a pistol in the other. “They sent you alone,” he said. “That’s either respect or an insult.”

John did not answer. He fired. Big Boss was already moving.

Round One

They fought through the airbase hangars, two of the deadliest men alive, each trying to get close enough to finish it. John was faster with a gun. Big Boss used the fog, the shadows, the old aircraft, appearing and disappearing like smoke, and every shot John fired hit metal instead of flesh.

Then Big Boss closed in, and John met him with gun-fu: pistol strikes, joint locks and point-blank shots, a style he had perfected over a thousand fights. Big Boss blocked the gun with his knife arm and threw John over his hip in a single movement. John landed hard, rolled up and fired twice. Big Boss twisted, and the bullets grazed his coat.

For the first time in years, both men felt the same thing: genuine respect.

The Turn

John came in again, gun first, and Big Boss used the technique he had invented in the jungles of the Soviet Union in 1964. CQC: close-quarters combat, the art of disarming and controlling an armed opponent. He caught John’s wrist, twisted the pistol out of his grip and turned it around, all in the space of half a second.

John reacted instantly, knocking the gun aside before Big Boss could fire, but now he was empty-handed against a man with a knife. He drew a backup pistol from his ankle. Big Boss took that one too. John drew a knife. Big Boss broke his grip on it and threw him into a crate.

John had faced a thousand enemies who could match his skill with a gun. He had never faced someone who could take every gun away.

The Finish

John fought on with his bare hands, battered and bleeding, and he was magnificent. He broke two of Big Boss’s fingers and nearly choked him unconscious against the side of a rusted fighter jet. But Big Boss slipped the choke, swept John’s legs and pinned him face-down on the runway, his own pistol pressed against the back of John’s head.

The fog swirled around them. John waited for the shot. It did not come. “Who sent you?” Big Boss asked quietly. John told him. Big Boss was silent for a long moment, then stood up and stepped back. “They will send more,” he said. “And next time, they will send someone worse.”

He tossed the pistol back to John, empty. “Tell them the contract failed. And tell them I am not interested in their table.” He disappeared into the fog. John sat on the cold runway for a long time, staring at the empty pistol, and for once, he did not go after his target.

The verdict

Big Boss wins

John Wick is the deadliest gunfighter alive, but Big Boss invented the art of disarming armed opponents at close range, and every time John closes the distance, he loses his weapon.

  • Battlefield experienceDecades of real wars against special forces and super-soldiers.
  • FieldcraftBig Boss uses fog and cover to neutralise John’s gun advantage.

How the rematch could go differently: At long range, in a crowded city where John knows every safe house, the Baba Yaga would have the edge.
