The Arena
Two contracts. Two clients. One target: a rogue scientist building a walking nuclear tank in a secret facility in the Alaskan wilderness. Agent 47 was hired to eliminate the scientist. Solid Snake was sent to destroy the tank. Neither of them knew the other would be there.
47 entered the facility disguised as a maintenance worker, his barcode hidden under a woollen hat. Snake entered through an air vent, a cardboard box folded under his arm. They met in a server room on the third level, at exactly the same moment, each one pointing a silenced pistol at the other’s head.
“You’re not a guard,” Snake said quietly. 47 did not blink. “Neither are you.” Outside, the blizzard howled against the walls.
Round One
Neither of them fired. A shot would bring every guard in the facility. Instead, they lowered their guns slowly, and for a few seconds, two professionals simply looked at each other. Then 47 moved, a fibre wire appearing in his hands as if from nowhere, and lunged for Snake’s throat.
Snake blocked it with his forearm, caught the wire and threw 47 over his shoulder into a server rack. Sparks flew. Alarms began to wail. Both of them heard boots running toward the room and, with the instincts of men who had survived a hundred missions, both of them vanished at the same moment.
The guards burst in and found nothing but a broken server and a suspiciously placed cardboard box. They walked past the box.
The Turn
They hunted each other through the facility for two hours. 47 changed disguises four times: a guard, a cook, a doctor, a security officer. Snake crawled through vents, hid in lockers and lay in the snow on the roof with a tranquilliser rifle. Every time one of them found the other, the soldiers arrived and they disappeared again.
47 almost won. He poisoned Snake’s ration, a perfect assassination. Snake, who had eaten worse things in the jungle, felt the poison in his stomach, recognised it, and swallowed an antidote from his kit. He was sick for ten minutes behind a generator. He was furious.
Snake almost won too. His tranquilliser dart hit 47 in the shoulder, and 47 pulled it out and kept walking, because his genetically engineered body barely noticed it.
The Finish
They met again in the hangar beside the tank itself, face to face, no disguises and no boxes left. 47 was the better assassin, precise and patient. But this was a fight, not an assassination, and Snake had spent his life fighting enemies who knew he was coming.
47 struck with the fibre wire. Snake ducked, used CQC to throw him against the tank’s armoured leg and pinned him there with a forearm across his throat. 47 struggled, then went still. Snake reached into his kit, pulled out a sleeping gas canister, and held it under 47’s nose until the assassin’s eyes closed.
When 47 woke up an hour later, he was lying in the snow outside the facility, with a note pinned to his suit: “Scientist arrested. Tank destroyed. Your client was selling the tank to terrorists. Find a better client.” 47 read it twice, folded it neatly, and walked off into the blizzard.
The verdict
Solid Snake wins
Agent 47 is the better assassin and nearly poisons Snake, but in a straight fight where neither can surprise the other, Snake’s combat experience and CQC give him the edge.
- Combat experienceSnake has fought soldiers, cyborgs and nuclear tanks.
- CQCHis close-quarters technique beats 47’s fibre wire.
- AdaptabilitySnake survives the poison and recovers to win the final fight.
How the rematch could go differently: If 47 had found Snake before Snake ever knew he existed, the first move would have been the last.
