The Arena

Someone paid the International Contract Agency a staggering sum to eliminate Lex Luthor, and the Agency sent the only man they trusted with the job. Agent 47 studied the target for three weeks. Lex never appeared in public himself. He used android doubles. He had armour, bodyguards, scanners and a security system designed to stop Superman.

47 noticed one weakness. Once a year, Lex hosted a charity gala on the top floor of LexCorp Tower, and he always attended in person, because his ego needed to hear the applause with his own ears. 47 put on a white waiter’s jacket and walked in through the kitchen.

Lex, in his office, watched his security feeds. Nothing unusual. Two hundred guests, eighty staff. He never looked twice at the waiters.

Round One

47 moved through the gala carrying a tray of champagne, invisible. He learned the guards’ routes, the camera blind spots, the timing of the scanners. He noticed that Lex’s personal chef always tasted the food before it was served, and that Lex always drank from one specific bottle of wine.

Lex noticed something too. His security AI flagged a waiter who did not appear in the staff database. Lex smiled thinly. He sent two bodyguards to find the man. They found a different waiter in the kitchen, unconscious and stripped of his jacket. 47 had already changed into a security uniform.

Lex stopped smiling. He ordered the floor locked down. Someone was in his tower, and they were good.

The Turn

Lex activated his warsuit in his private office and began scanning every human on the floor, cross-referencing faces, heartbeats and walking patterns. Within minutes, the AI found him: one security officer with a heartbeat too calm and a stride too precise. The warsuit’s targeting system locked on.

47 felt the attention shift and calmly changed plans. He walked into the server room, planted a small device, and walked out again thirty seconds before the warsuit arrived. Lex burst in, saw nothing, and returned to his office, furious.

His security AI reported that the threat had left the building. Lex poured himself a glass of his favourite wine to calm down. It had been a very long night.

The Finish

The wine was perfect. Lex took two sips before the room began to tilt. He looked at the glass, then at his security feeds, which now showed a waiter standing calmly in the corner of his office, a man his AI had stopped seeing ten minutes earlier, because the device in the server room had quietly erased 47 from every camera.

“The chef tastes the food,” 47 said. “Not the wine. You never let anyone touch the wine.” Lex tried to activate the warsuit. His fingers would not obey. He sank into his chair, conscious but paralysed, staring at the bald man with the barcode on the back of his head.

47 checked his watch, then placed a small card on Lex’s desk. “Your client wanted you dead,” he said. “But my client changed. Someone paid more to send you a message instead.” The card said only: “Stop.” 47 walked out of the tower through the main entrance, and nobody even glanced at him.

The verdict

Agent 47 wins

Lex Luthor has every defence money and genius can buy, but Agent 47 exploits the one habit Lex never questions and the one kind of person Lex never notices: the staff.

  • Disguise47 moves through Lex’s defences as staff nobody looks at.
  • PatienceHe studies Lex’s habits until he finds the one weakness.
  • PlanningErasing himself from the cameras gives him the final approach.

How the rematch could go differently: A Lex who stayed home and sent an android to the gala would leave 47 with nothing to poison but a machine.
